1 quart left at oil change???

Okay so I have no clue if this is the right area for this thread so Mods please move it if it is necessary.

I changed my moms oil today, she said that the oil light just started coming on a couple times today so I knew she would be low. But she only had about 1 quart of oil in her 2007 Dodge Caravan when I changed the oil today. She does not have a single mark on the driveway where she parks, there is not any excessive smoke from the exhaust, she is my mom and she drives it... well like my mom, she had about 4,000k miles on the oil and that was about 3 months worth of time, and I would say about 70% of her miles are highway and 30% are stop and go traffic. My dad said he checked it once on the oil before this oil and she was about 2 quarts low.

Re: 1 quart left at oil change???

The only thing that she did kinda "wrong" is she went 10k miles on her thing of oil before this but that was done in about 6-7 months so I don't see how that would cause her oil to get eaten this fast. She also has a CEL for her EGR valve but that shouldn't do anything to eat oil. I could see it happening because she was eating oil though. I checked her Breather tube for blow by oil and there was not any.

Does anyone have a clue why this would happen? I am going to send some of her oil in for analysis on her next oil change. I am probably going to a compression test and what not to see if anything is wrong there. Anything else I should check? Right now I am just telling her to check her oil every time that she fills the car up with gas.

Re: 1 quart left at oil change???

More info: Her car takes 5 quarts of oil and it looked like there may have been some coolant in her oil but I couldn't really tell, I don't think that there actually was any coolant but that is why I am planning on sending some of her oil in for analysis next oil change.

Re: 1 quart left at oil change???

Especially if it had been run low on oil before, that can score the cylinder walls badly and cause some blow by. It seems as though those engines have a problem with that. 3.8l?

if there was coolant in the oil, you would know. it would like like caramel rather than just blackish burnt up oil

Okay, I read something that those cars eat a lot of oil when their valve seals go bad. I would do a compression test but I don't know How I am going to do it on the back 3 cylinders, stupid American V6 FWD vehicles. If I only do it on the front 3 think I could get a general sense of how they are doing?

Yeah it is the 3.8l, like I said above, someone told me that they like to eat a lot of oil when the valve seals go bad, this makes sense to me. You think that could be it also? And I think that someone could have filled it up with too much oil and that caused too much crank pressure and that would cause the rings to go, because this is the first time she has had me change her oil, she usually has a shop do it

Okay, scratch the coolant idea then.

Re: 1 quart left at oil change???

Haha so i go to test her compression and after I get 1 cylinder done she says she has to take the girls to a movie so she just drives off to the movies and she probably won't be back in 30 minutes or so lol

Re: 1 quart left at oil change???

No I put them all back :P I told her the fuel pump relay and the distributor were unconnected and she would have to connect them to drive it and she glared at me so I fixed that lol.

I cant complain though she gave me $20 and I owed her and my dad $60 so I changed both of their cars oil and now they said we were even

Re: 1 quart left at oil change???

So
cylinder 2 - 180
cylinder 4 - 190
cylinder 6 - 180

Not too bad, could be better but I don't think that is really the problem. That leads me to believe it is the valve seals. I am going to start using high mileage oil and see if that will start reconditioning the seals like it is suppose to :P

Then I may try moving to a higher viscosity oil but that is kinda my last resort right now, other than the inevitable (rebuilding the motor), seeing my dad just got layed off I don't think my mom will want to do that anytime soon.
