gauge cluster and tailights went out!!!!

So to the genuis that decided a rats nests of wire's under the dash was a good idea. Your dumb.
I was driving and I noticed my speedo and rmp clusters flickering. And then smoke and then nothing.
I wasn't worried about it, till a buddy called and said he saw me driving with no tailights. So I opend up the fuse box by the drivers side door. And replaced 3 fuse's. But still nothing. The smoke came from what looked like between the right of the sterring wheel and the radio... As of now, I replacedll the fuses, but still no gauge lights, and no tailights..
What's yall's thoughts.

Re: gauge cluster and tailights went out!!!!

you say you have a rats nest of wires...if it were me thats where i'd be looking. if you saw smoke then something is shorted...You have a brake light switch under your dash and its near the top of your brake pedal, when you depress the brake it lets off of a button on the switch and thus connects the circuit to the brake lights making them come on. It should be a White/Yellow wire going into the switch and a White/Black wire coming out of it. If its not a fuse to your brake lights I would look there and you may find some wiring that has lost some of its insulation and possibly shorted out something else. It wouldn't be a bad idea to try and organize some of those wires under your dash too, check their condition and connections.

Re: gauge cluster and tailights went out!!!!

i believe hes talking about his driving lights not his brake lights, i have the same exact problem right now. i got headlights blinkers and brake lights, but not driving lights or parking lights as well as gauge or insturment lights. i dont know what to do but take it in and have a pro figure out whats wrong with it. im not exactly an electrican.

and for me all bulbs are good, and no fuse's are bad.

Re: gauge cluster and tailights went out!!!!

well regardless of which lights are out...whether it be brake lights or just the tailight, they're still on a circuit and there is still a fuse box for them all, the possibility of a tailight vs a brake could be the same, i just know that i would be looking in that mess of wires that you say you have under your dash, something is definitely shorted out somewhere, the fun part is trying to find it, but you've got a head start, you got some "smoke signals"...lol sorry had to

Re: gauge cluster and tailights went out!!!!

I appreciate everyones help. The previous owner had tried to install a radio and left the main power wire unwired, and used the remote wire to power it by twisting the yellow and red togethear. This causing the main battery wire to short, and blow 3 fuses under the hood.
