Got backed into by a truck :(

So one of my employees backed into my car while it was parked behind a store I manage. He was really straight-forward, called me immediately. We filed a police report and I'm in contact with his insurance company. I just put over $1000 into the exhaust and replaced almost the entire ignition system. The engine is a H22A JDM swap with 110k put on it since the swap. It is well-maintained, and runs great. The 5 speed gearbox shifts fine as well, it has 210k on it (as well as the chassis).

The insurance company will only give me $2950 if I buy back the car for $1250 netting $1700. If I sell them the car they will give me $3500 and I walk away. I am very tempted to walk away but this prelude was a serious hobby for me and I don't want to leave the scene but there are no preludes to be had within 100 mile radius of me within my price range. I'm not sure if I should buy it back and fix it myself or not because it is my daily driver and I can't risk giving up the $3500 for a mere chance of getting my car back.

I've decided I'm going to pay like $50 to a auto body tech to go look at my car tomorrow to see if it looks like it could be pulled out. If he says yes I'm either going to rent a comealong or pay a shop to pull it out. Then I'll buy a new headlight (or 2 so they match), ps reservoir (it cracked), hammer out the fender and hood until I can afford to replace them.

Attached are the pics of my car in its current state, half pushed over a curb.

So here is a really crappy cellphone shot of the point of impact.

Here is another crappy cell shot of the whole car, back tires behind the curb.

Here is a rather good cellphone shot of car showing where it is bent.

The other side of the parking lot is an upward slope where my employee was parked. He said all he did was put his truck in reverse, no gas, and it did the above damage. He does drive a 2005 Silverado:

I'm not really sure if anyone can give me any advice on any of this but anything said is better than nothing I suppose. I more or less just wanted to share my grief. I feel a little better after typing this, still depressed. But everything happens for a reason I suppose...

Re: Got backed into by a truck :(

I can't believe it!! Your baby I would be so upset. It doesn't seem too bad from what I can see in those terrible pictures. Is there any frame damage? Also is the insurance company gonna salvage it (stupid question really cuz I know they are but there is the slightest of possibilities that they won't). If you can fix it for the money that you're going to get from the insurance I would go that route as long as your frame has no damage. I would also see if you could get them to not salvage the title. Man oh man that sucks and I'm truly sorry

Re: Got backed into by a truck :(

I appreciate everyone's comments.

The insurance company already decided the damage was worth more than the car, so it is "totaled". I never planned on selling the car so a salvage title isn't a big deal, not there is anything I can do about it now. I really want to keep it if possible, but this is a good/clear out for me to get another car. The problem is will spending $3500 on another car be better than what I had with my car? All I can find so far that I'm remotely interested in is a 93 240sx for $2500, I have to call for more details. There are no preludes in the New Orleans area, but if anyone sees any 4th or 5th gens for less than $3500 post it up here please. I checked autotrader, modified car trader, ebay motors, and nola.com (local classifieds had the 240sx).

Lets say for example that the 240sx has 200k on it. I will easily invest that other $1000 into maintenance to basically "trade" my 97 lude for the 240sx in comparable condition. I will lose my exhaust, but I'll have a ride that will be a good daily driver.

Lets also say I keep my prelude. I have $1700 to spend fixing it, and I could really give a crap about cosmetics. Replace PS reservoir $20, rent a comalong for a day $10, headlights $200, hammer to make things open and close right $free. In this scenario I would have about $1400 extra with a banged up front end.

So here is my major debate... Scrap the car and spend $3500 on another car (or $2500 on a car and $1000 in maintenance). Or keep the car and $1400 but god knows what kind of other complications I may run into in the future.

Other considerations:
The crankshaft pulley seems to pop off about every year and a half (happened twice since I owned the car). Each time I replaced the crankshaft keyway and pulley. After the last time the pulley wasn't put on exactly straight (slight wobble) and that has always made me nervous that the pulley might come loose faster than usual, or stress an old crankshaft that could snap.

I looked for my title for like 3 hours last night and couldn't find it. I'm going to the DMV tomorrow to get a replacement so it will be at least a week before I could sell my car to the insurance company and I have rides to/from work at the moment.

Re: Got backed into by a truck :(

Update: My boss gave me friday off to give the comalong thing a shot. I'm going to get the car pulled out and put flat on the parking lot. I'm going to goto cole's rental and rent the comalong for $10, then I'm going to pull out the rad support and run the car to make sure it is all good. My main issue now is getting a ps reservoir before then so I don't burn up my pump running it dry.

I might just pull out the support and not run the car just to see how things will line up. I just want to be as sure as possible that if I keep the car it will be usable for my commute (100 miles per day, ugh).

I'm so tempted to walk away and call it a day.... I don't know. I love this car and I wouldn't try this hard if I didn't maintain it so well and think it was going to last. I have this sinking feeling that I am wasting my time but if I walk away from this car now I feel it might majorly regret it.

I would definitely keep it, you know the problems your car has ATM and it doesn't seem like you have that much damage.

Ya, I'm leaning towards that as well. I know sooo much about preludes and H-series engines after owning this car and being on forums the last few years. I don't have a fraction of this knowledge for any other car/engine. I know a bit about Nissan, which was why I was leaning towards the 240sx but they just don't suit me like a prelude does.

Yeah, a few people here said the same thing. The employee that hit me was really straight-forward though, no reason to lie (at least I don't think). In any instance it's inconsequential now that the damage is done and the insurance will cover it.

Re: Got backed into by a truck :(

All the 240's in the area are dogged, abused whores. Keep the 'lude. It's easy to get body parts for a 5th gen. Bodywork is pretty simple, too.

If you had a 4th gen, I could have hooked you up on body panels.

Unfortunately, I can't see the pics cause they're blocked on my company computer lol.

Re: Got backed into by a truck :(

^ Yes they are. The one in question had no pictures or information so I'm sure it was modified by some guy that painted it bright yellow and put giant wing on the back whilst not changing oil, lol. I swear I described most of the "tuners" I see in my area.

I don't know anything about body work but I am always learning with my lude. I never knew how to clean egr ports, but the lude taught me (with a helms manual and write-ups on forums like this one). I didn't know what a crows foot wrench was, but now I do, etc. I can take my time restoring it after I get it on the road, at the moment my boss is just agitated how much of my time this is taking. Once I get him off my back for a month I can start working on it again piece by piece.

It really isn't much damage. The adjuster said the body damage was more than the value of the car so it's automatically a total. Someone told me that if they did just fix that portion and paint those 2 parts I could go back and complain that it didn't match my car and get the whole car painted. So the insurance company would have shelled out $4k+ easy to a body shop for a good paint job and the necessary body work. I can see why they call it "totaled" even though I can probably fix it for less than $300.

Lol, I find myself in that predicament a lot. Often, I am tempted to buy equipment but my budget is so limited and I don't know if I'll ever use the equipment enough to pay itself off. I usually end up paying someone else for stuff I don't have the equipment to do, although it would be nice to break that habit.

Exactly the situation I'm in. I need a TIG welder, but can't bring myself to buy one just to fix my quarter panel cancer.

Get a fender and a hood and see how much it's going to cost to paint them. Fix your lights yourself and call it good. Don't give up on your baby..

Aw hell that's not as bad as I would have thought. If you want, I can come give you a hand with the bodywork when the time comes. We gotta keep 'ludes on the road... lol.

Re: Got backed into by a truck :(

I am so incredibly appreciative of everybody's advice. Thank you guys so much. I will heed your advice and find the fender/hood on ebay or this/other prelude forums and do everything I can to fix the lude. I will keep the ps, because all I need is a $20 reservoir, but if the pump goes I'll rip it out.

I'll post updates as they develop.

Seriously, you guys were the only one's to support me. Everyone else in my life was quick to tell me to scrap the car or offered no advice/support at all. This thread really meant a lot to me.

I'd like to extend a special thanks to Phantom240. I was a little surprised to have an offer for help, most of my friends are dicks or worthless and I've always done everything on my own with the exception of my dad. I'll probably shoot you a PM when I get ready to replace the fender.

Preludes are an odd breed of car. They hold a special place in most of our hearts lol.

Are you on NOSR by chance?

I am not yet a member of that forum, although I may look into it. I wasn't aware of its existence until now.

Yes, good call. Carbon Fiber FTW! I will update as progress is made, tomorrow is the day I pull the radiator support. I bought a 4000lb capacity comealong from harbor freight today for $15 and a strap rated for 6500lbs for $12 so I can better pull the support without kinking it. I'm feeling pretty good about this. Wish me luck!

Re: Got backed into by a truck :(

advice on pulling it: you might have to unstrap and re adjust a few times. that's what I'd probably do. also, pull a little, then hit the support where it's bent a few times. then continue pulling and repeat. best of luck man

Re: Got backed into by a truck :(

Update: Finished pulling and banging stuff out. Pics below.

My car got hit behind one of the stores I manage so the same employee that hit me was able to help me fix it. Its ironic I suppose. We hooked the comealong anchor to his truck and we were able to knock it out quickly without having to push the car anywhere. This also came in handy for releasing the comealong since he would just back the truck up a couple inches and I could pull it out.

Here is a a better "before" shot of the damage:

Here are some "after" shots:

Here is a before and after of the radiator support:

The hood still locks and pops fine, the release works great. All in all everything still lines up okay. It certainly isn't perfect but it will do for now.
