the imfamous idle surger plus more...

alright well the weather is getting cold and like last year my car has begun the all to well known problem preludes have of idle surging. i put the damn thing in the shop and had it looked at they couldnt find a reason for the surge or my other problem "mechanic seemed like a moron" besides the surge when i push hard on the brake pedal at a stand still of coarse the rpms will drop down to about 200 the engine doesnt stall but it sure wants to. this only happens if i push the pedal all the way to the floor. any ideas on what this may be? and could it be linked to the idle surge? when i hold the brake pedal down a little the surging stops as well... i have all new pads and a new master cylinder.

Re: the imfamous idle surger plus more...

First thing to check is your coolant level. Flow of coolant through the idle control valve and fast idle valve is what helps regulate the idle speed. The next easiest step is to remove the cover on top of the fast idle valve. This is on the main log part of the intake manifold to the right and has a brass colored cover with two phillips screws holding it on. There is a doughnut in there with two "slots" on it. Screw this down in a clockwise direction until it tightens down. Replace cover. These two screws may be very tight, use a pair of vise grips on a stubby phillips so that you can apply torque and pressure at the same time if necessary. Helps keep you from rounding out the screw head. The idle control valve is also on the log portion of the intake in the center with a two wire plug connected to it. If antifreeze is not flowing through the little coolant lines that run from this through the fast idle valve due to corrosion then your car cannot regulate the idle properly. Also removing this(two 12's) and cleaning out the accumulated gunk from the little screen can help with idle quality but does not usually cause surging that I know of. This setup can vary slightly from one honda to the next, just follow the small pinky sized coolant hoses to find them.
