How do I add coolant?

I checked the reservoir on the left and it is completely empty. What should I do? Just add a brand name coolant from walmart (50/50) into the cap or the reservoir directly?

Re: How do I add coolant?

get prestone 50/50 and fill it up to the full mark in the reservoir just take the cap off and pour it in also make sure the car is cool and take your radiator cap off and fill it as well. you prob have a leak keep some spare coolent in the car till you find the leak

Fill it in the reservoir AND the radiator cap? How much in the cap? Also I can't find the fill line inthe plastic reservoir. Where isit near? What's the difference between reservoir and rad/rad cap?

Re: How do I add coolant?

dude a lil common sense goes a long way
look at the radiator find the silver thingy and unscrew it
pour coolent in until you can't any more
and look on the side of the reservoir it will say full
fill it to there then replace said caps

Re: How do I add coolant?

the resiviour is in the front left of your prelude its a semi clearish milk jug looking thing, depending on the year of the lude you might need to look at it from the side for the full mark, fill it until its full, then take the radiator cap off, its the silver cap on top of the radiator, the radiator is the closest thing to you if your standing infront of your lude when you open the hood(its black and like 3 feet long and 2 inchs or so wide with a silver cap right on the top, add coolant in that to(using a funnel) and fill it as full as you can without overfilling it, so pour a little in at a time and check. Make sure you dont overfill it otherwise when your driving your car will smell from the coolant burning off parts of your car. Hope i helped.

Yes fill both. Fill the cap up to the top, and for the reservoir, the fill line is hard to see, try to look around the back of it with a flashlight to find the line. The difference is, the radiator is where all the coolant passes through to well cool off. The reservoir aka overflow reservoir is where the excess coolant goes. Once the radiator reaches a certain pressure, a relief valve is opened on the radiator cap which allows the excess coolant to go into the reservoir. Then when the car is shut off and or cools down, another valve opens creating a vacuum that sucks the coolant/water back in from the overflow reservoir.

STEP 1: remove silver cap on rad.
STEP 2: fill with coolant til topped off.
STEP 3:Tighten cap on rad.
STEP 4: Unscrew reservoir cap.
STEP 5:shine flashlight into neck of the bottle to show on the side as to where the level of coolant is at if any.
STEP 6:Fill reservoir til topped to FILL line.
Step 7:Tighten cap on reservoir bottle.
STEP 8:Drive to Popeyes and grab yourself a bucket of chicken and pat urself on the back for a job well done!!!

Agreed. This is not a car specific question. This should have really been researched first. I suggest the author take some time to learn simple, basic car maintenance. I would suggest HowStuffWorks - Learn How Everything Works!, and google. Not to mention buying a chilton manual, looking in the owners manual, or I believe there is an owners manual available for download on this very site.

You need to be very careful to not mistake this for the high pressure side because that can explode the refill canister and hurt you very badly. You should look in to your auto repair manuals for you car before you try to do this job.
