overheating when headlights are on

When im driving during the day with the lights off the temp gauge stays at half way where it should. But at night when my lights are on the temp goes up constantly but the actually motor is not over heating. I replaced the thermostat then i realized that it only does it when the lights are on so its something electrical. Any ideas?
