Weird problem after engine swap!

I have a 1994 Prelude

I had a so called "Honda Expert" swap out my stock engine (F22A1) with a V-Tech (H22A).
3 days turned into 6 weeks and FINALLY got the car back only to find out it was running really rough.

Idiot toothless jackass mechanic put in new timing belt, water pump, plugs and cap. (The wires we not changed because he said they looked good). He also hooked up the 3 extra wires and the Vtec kicks in at 5000 rpm, so I know that's right.

Brought it to a new mechanic.
He checked it out and says it has:
- great compression
- igniting fine
- has injector pulse at fuel injectors
- no noise in valve train
- spark detonates fine

The problem is that it idles roughly and surges while idling. Attempts to adjust the timing make it run rougher. When driving under 60, it kinda lurches like it has a blown valve.

The new mechanic (with all of his teeth) says he thinks that the Idiot toothless jackass mechanic did not install the timing belt properly, but suggested I run this by you folks to see if you have any clue on how to solve this before we have to strip it all down again.

Re: Weird problem after engine swap!

Well surging at idle would most likely be your FITV (fast idle thermo valve) or IACV (idle air control valve).

That information and how to fix it can be found here:

the FINAL idle problem thread!!!!!

It is also possible that you need to reset your ECU mapping, either with a scan tool or using the hard way.

Cruise Control Delete
Scroll to the bottom of the page and there is two posts that talk about it. It will help rough idle.

As for your other problems, I don't know.

Re: Weird problem after engine swap!

did u check the timing itself? like have the piston 1 at tdc and see if the hash marks on the side of the cam gear line up with the top of the head? if its off by one tooth, ur car will run like straight up ish. let us know what you find.

Re: Weird problem after engine swap!

checking the timing is a pretty simple deal .. id have him check it .. should only charge you an hr .. just a valve cover and the timing covers .. i can do a tb wp and have it running in 2 hrs .. its worth checking ..

Re: Weird problem after engine swap!

easiest way to check the timing is by using a timing light.

Re: Weird problem after engine swap!

does it struggle to stay running at idle? if so, it def sounds like your t-belt is off by one or a coupla teeth.
very easy to check, just take the VC off.

Re: Weird problem after engine swap!

i have the same problem but i never did a timing belt change after the swap, it has a looping idle and when accelerating it surges, only does it when the car is warn, cold it runs like a champ, i was thinking that it could be the tensioner when the belt gets warm it loosens up? help
