prelude halfshaft question...

hey guys finally got brand new axles but noticed alot of play in the half shaft. my friend positivley told me that this is the reason it vibrates through accelaration and stops after around 40mph. i found a site that offers a brand new upgraded half shaft, but discusses how the (driver) axle needs to have a female inner joint. my question is since for some reason they note that this axle is needed, does our preludes typically come with a female inner joint? bc from pics on google images (typing in "prelude axles") it looks like both ends of the driver side axle are both male ended... please help me witht his issue from expertise/expirence with this thanks preludezone! but heres the link for better observation... thanks!

Re: prelude halfshaft question...

vibration caused by the half shaft? where is the vibration? the car? the steering wheel? the brake pedal?

Re: prelude halfshaft question...

The car man. i just replaced the axles so i was possibly thinking it was a faulty or un balanced axle but i did notice the half shaft had play so it made me lean towards that. not sure though, but the axles are brand new napa axles not remans, so im un-sure of the issue at this point but if you take a ride it really isn't bad but if its your car you cannot stand it at all and thats how i am at this point lol

Re: prelude halfshaft question...

I'm thinking you may have not gotten the inner joint fully seated in the transaxle. Make sure that thing is in till the snap ring seats.

Re: prelude halfshaft question...

I don't know if the fourth gen Preludes have the extension shaft on the one side of the engine. If so, you only need to check one side. Most front drivers have both shafts go directly into the the transaxle.

If you recall, there was a retention ring in the splines of the inner joint. If this is not fully seated, the shaft can work its way out a little and cause vibration. You can also loose a lot of transmission oil. Jack up the car and see if you can push the inner joint into the transaxle. Also look to see if you have lost some fluid.

As a check, use a large screwdriver or small prybar and try to pry the inner joint loose from the transaxle like you did when you removed the old ones. If there seems to be resistance, then the joint is most likely seated.

Re: prelude halfshaft question...

There is a bearing in the intermediate shaft The holder that bolts to the block. I suppose it could cause vibration if it got bad enough. It should be pretty obvious if the bearing is bad enough to cause vibration.
