About rim sizes

I heard somewhere that the larger your rims are the less hp your car will make.Is this true? They said something like it takes more power to overcome the size of the wheels thus robbing you of like 15hp?It was 18" rims that they said would take this much?If this is true what is the ideal size of the rims so that they wont rob hp but not look like a ganster car or a scooter.

its not so much about size as it is about rotating mass. if you can find an 18" rim thats the same exact weight as the stock 16's, and of course as long as you get a tire with the same diameter as the stock tires. you will feel absolutly NO effect. but this is theoretically speaking because ive never heard of such an 18" rim that weighed just as much as a 16" alloy rim.... but yes, if you had an 18" rim that weighed MORE then your stock 16's then yes, you loose power. just stick with 16's or 17's. generally speaking a 17 will be only a little bit heavier then a 16... not really enough to feel a difference.

thanks SI SPEED(Drew).I looked it up a little bit and read that it was the diameter that took more for it to spin.It was that it took more power for it to rotate the tire because of the length it took not actually the weight itself.

What do you think about the 18" enkei's will they weight less then the stock 16's? I really want the black 6 point enkei's maybe the 16'' wheels.

with all physical aspects being similar (size, weight, etc), the final thing you might want to consider is cost. for the most part, 18" tires cost a bit more than 16" tires and depending on where you go, mounting/unmounting tires on an 18" wheel might cost more as well...
also, if you are not considerably lowered, running some 18" wheels on some rubber band tires will make your car look like a 4x4...

16/17/18's + stock suspension = gross
16/17/18's + stock suspension + body kit = one helluva disgusting looking 4x4

hahahaha I think you have to take into consideration your overall car when buy wheels. you want something that compliments your car but at the same time don't compromise your performance. For starters when buying wheels I'd make sure that the new size wheels plus tires equal the same diameter as my stock wheels with stock size tires. If you are lowered you don't want to go too big and get some crazy off set.

You can pull off 18s but your gonna be on some tee-shirt tires. your ride will be horrible. you could get beefier tires but you wouldn't be able to lower the car too much. I for one love the fact that I can't see inside my fenders. This was also true on stock wheels. Thats because my wheel and tire diameter is the exact same as my stock settings. I didn't give anything up and I gained contact area on my tires for better handling. My wheels also weigh the same as my stock wheels so no lost of performance there.

you just have to think about what you want and how well it compliments your car.

ps: Ogs pulls of 18s quiet nicely; but his car to me needs to go down maybe another half to one inch imo...

while a kit might compensate slightly, its the wheel well gap that will make the car look like a 4x4...altho the overall diameter of the wheel might be the same, the really thin tires on an 18" wheel exaggerates the wheel well gap...

how can my car go down half to one inch when I can barely get a finger between the tire and wheel well? you're insane ace.

When in doubt about the size, Use this to find out how the setup you want compares with the setup you've got.

It's on a Miata site, but still very useful.

Yes with lowering car's I am insane. should be able to see any wheel well gaps. I guess it's cause of the angle of the photos I've seen of your car make it look like it's sitting high...

That can happen with 18 inch wheels Dillon.
Usually, you'll have to equip that wheel with thinner tires than usual.

Lowering a car can be dangerous as well.
If you live in an area with bad roads, you have to take in consideration about the components underneath the car as well. You can pay the $$ for lowering a car super low and having a huge body kit.
Besides, body kits, altezza lights were soooooooooooooooo 5 years ago. when you were 9.
