Hoping to find help for my tricky situation!!!

Ok to start I recently purchased a 4th gen lude with a fresh 97' jdm h22a swap. The swap was done right before I bought the car, so I knew I was getting into a project going in I.E ( fixing what the ex owner couldn't figure out) Any way, The check engine light is burned out, or unplugged??? And when I start my car in the morning it has a really rough idle, its almost as if there is no cold idle??? My VAFC reads my idle at 650-750 rpm all the time...Also my rev limiter kicks in at exactly 6820 rpm...which is a bit frustrating because this motor should have a bit more to give me while in VTEC...I mean isnt that where the fun is??? Any ways the wiring on my ecu is a bit shotty, but I am running the correct p13ecu...I have some pix to check out...lemme know what you think!!! Oh ya check out the patch on my head, thus why I am looking for a new one!!![IMG][/IMG]

What in the world happen to the top portion of your head?
Now that, is a "hack-job."

6820 sounds more like the Si rev limiter.
Your VACF is reading directly from the coil, so the RPM is good, my guess is like you may have a dirty IAC or some sort of coolant related problem as im "assuming" that hack-job-wiring that leads to your thermo/stat/sensor?

Im not quite 100% familiar with the h22 motor myself.

Silly me, is that not your vtec solenoid valve?
read chapter 6-6 in the 5th gen Manual, there it shows you how to diagnose the valve.

5th gen online manual

good luck.

alright....

For starters just because your vafc reads that vtec is engaging does mean it's working. The vafc is a hack; so it manipulates sensors to get what is programmed to get.

I think you have some wiring issues.

Get me a side picture of the vtec siloniod, all angles of your intake manifold. meaning top/side/bottom... every angle possible.

That wire is that you took a picture of is your vtec wire. look at your ecu... Make sure is says p13 or p5m or p5p. After varifying that it's a prelude vtec ecu, look at the wiring that runs to the ecu and look for a green/yellow wire. it's in Section A8. So if you have the ecu right in front of you it will be on the top left. 8 spaces over. Trace where that wiring is running to. That's your vtec wire. it should be running to that spot in your first picture.

Pull the check engine codes as well. If you get me those I can help you a lot more.

I also need to see pics of your distributor as well btw.

O.K. Never mind on the side shot of your vtec siloniod. I'm 100% sure your vtec is not even working. You see that 12mm srew right below where you would install the external coil pack? That is where you have to run your vtec pressure switch (oil switch). It's not there so you don't have vtec. your vafc is manipulating your ecu to think you have vtec but you don't. Also What wiring harness are you using? Do have a loose green plug in right below the spot in the first pic? let me know...

it does help me help you. Dispite what year that motor is, it's still obdI. Japan never had an obdII. Anyways... you see that one screw that you would need a 12mm socket for? it's to the left of the distributor in the picture I'm quoting. That is where your oil pressure switch goes. Just go to honda and tell them you need a oil pressure switch for a civic. Maybe it'll be a little cheaper than 70 bux then. Here is a picture of what it's suppose to look like:

you should have a loose green connector plug somewhere in that area for the pressure switch. if you don't see it then you need a h22 wiring harness. or you're gonna have to wiring it up yourself and run it to the ecu. your vtec siloniod seems to be hooked but make sure its ran to the ecu. pinout number A8 as stated above in one of my previous posts.

Now for your idling problems. those could be a couple of things:

1) not enough fuel i.e. your vafc is hooked up wrong. (wiring issue)
2.) Idle screw needs to be adjusted
3.) intake are temp. sensor bad or not hooked up.
4.) leak of somesort. could be throttle body, intake manifold or vacuum leak.

Pull the check engine codes you are getting and give us the numbers.

the first thing I would do is do a leak down test. start the car up and spray break cleaner on your throttle body and intake manifold and see if the car stays on. if it stalls you know your problem. Next if that's not the problem check your vacuum lines and make sure they are hooked up correctly. Please get me some pictures of your intake manifold. That way I can see what your looking at. If the vacuum line is not the problem then we now it has to do with one or more sensors. that's why we need the check engine codes you are throwing.

My engine is about 60-70% different from how it actually looks in a tipical h22 engine bay. My intake manifold is entirely different....

Not all your problems but it will get rid of one of your check engine codes. you don't have to buy anything. just get a piece of electrical wire and follow these short steps:

How To: Diagnosing Your Check Engine Light (OBD I)

yes.... three things can cause vtec not to work. oil pressure, vtec silenoid, and knock sensor. your oil pressure switch is not there.

Now for the picture I have quoted... can you zoom out a little. I know it's below the distributor but i can't tell if that green plug is a coolant sensor or not. so zoom out a little please. Sorry it takes me so long to respond back. I got so many things going on right now.

its cool man your time is greatly appreciated!!! Would you suggest, since I am swapping the head, that I pay a shop to install the head, and run the switch? Or do you think a head swap and running that switch is easy enough?
