Wheel bearings

Hey ppl I just wanted to know if it is absolutely neccesary to replace the front wheel bearings if you take them out. I am soon going to be putting in new wheel studs. I have seen everyone say that you have to get NEW bearings when you take out the old ones. To my understanding this is a must if you are putting in new studs. Why can't we reuse the old bearings? Is this a case of the bearing becoming contaminated, Falling apart?? Also is it absolutely necceassary for a machine shop to take out the old bearing and install the new one with a hydraulic press. Isn't there some kind of tool that can be rented or bought that will take out the old bearing for you. Can't we just press in the new one at home by putting the hub in a vise of something and pushing the new bearing in?

Yeah I have never done this before so i have little idea about how this works. Help me out folks.
