yeah, cali is pretty lame with their emissions bs. i was told the check engine light doesn't come on, but its on before the car turns over. a light pops up then it goes away. i would assume this is normal, but not sure. what do you mean by cat converter or test pipe?

Your exhaust system. It goes: Header, Downpipe, Catalytic converter/test pipe, and finally muffler. So, which do you have?

hey ,what you need to do have the computer checked for codes and then have them check the monitors ,some states i believe allows 2 out ,seven to be out ,go to auto zone or just buy your self the obd2 reader ,and then google the codes yourself .

So you have a test pipe and a cat? Interesting, considering they go in the same place. A test pipe is meant to be a "less-restrictive cat." If you have both, someone did your exhaust pretty jankily (yes, i made that up for you).

Re: 97 Prelude MIL smog fail?!?!

lol i dont know man...i made that up to, i just bought the car and its lowered so i cant really see a thing under the car. when i took it to the smog shop the guy plugged in the computer but nothing negative came back...could it be that it needs a tune up??...the guy i bought it from the last time he payed for registeration on the vehicle was back in feb. of 2009..he said its mainly been sitting in his driveway..could it be that it needs a tune up?...i checked the plugs they are NGK i think, but the tips on the spark plugs look worn down and black.. could that possibly be it?

Re: 97 Prelude MIL smog fail?!?!

I would suggest you replace these parts if you do not know when it had it's last tune-up:

Spark plugs (NGK Platinum G-Series = $13.00)
Plug wires (Bosch Platinum = $50.00)
Distributor cap and rotor
o2 sensor probably wouldn't hurt either.
