SH model...which engine?

So I am buying a 98 Prelude SH vtec with a blown engine. I am looking for an engine to swap it with but am unsure what engine would be a good swap. On ebay, some of the h22a engines specifically say (not for sh model), but from what I understand, the h22a is better than the h23a...I think. What would be the best...easiest....and cheapest engine to swap with it?

Re: SH model...which engine?

Cheapest will probably be a OEM rebuild.
SH has things that sit just a little bit differently so if you decide to buy a new engine keep that in mind. H22a probably has the best bang if stock. H23 handles turbo like a champ. Depends on where you plan on taking your lude.

Use that search up top..... many people have asked this question bud

Re: SH model...which engine?

I tried to search the forum for a while now with little luck. Im not planning on doing too much right now, just looking to do an easy and reliable swap. I found a JDM H22A for $1K. I just need this car to be reliable.

Re: SH model...which engine?

You can put an H23 in a 5G? I thought the stock engine for the SH was the H22a4?

Re: SH model...which engine?

Seeing as how your last post either contained a typo, or you just didn't understand the replies, I'll break it down for ya.

Stock SH Engine (U.S.): H22A4 (notice the "4" on the end)
Stock Base Engine (U.S.): H22...something.
JDM SH engine (Japanese stock): H22A Type S
JDM Base engine (Japanese stock): H22A

Now, and this is the important part, are you looking to just drop in an engine? Or an engine, transmission and a few other modifications?

Why do I ask this? Because if you have an SH model Prelude that was built in the US, it came sock with an H22A4 engine. Which will drop right in that puppy, with the tranny it already has. No alteration required.

If you plan on dropping in a H22A, which is a JDM engine and meant for the base model Prelude, NOT the SH, you will need to switch the trans already in the car for a base model trans (about $600 for a 5spd) along with some other alterations, like switching the transmission mounts, engine wiring harness, oil pump cover, etc.

If you plan on dropping in a H22A Type S, which came stock in the SH Prelude in Japan (hence "JDM") then it will pretty much drop right in there, although some modification will be required. I have no idea what that may be, by the way.

Those are pretty much your best 3 choices. For the easiest (although least badass) swap, go with the OEM replacement, which is a USDM H22A4 motor. For a bit more power and a bit more aggravation, stick in a JDM H22A and base trans. For the ultimate in N/A power and a gigantic ballsack load of cash, not to mention less hassle than a H22A swap and the ability to retain ATTS, drop in a JDM H22A Type S motor. Also if you buy a Type S motor with the trans that comes with it you'll get an LSD trans plus ATTS, for the ultimate in handling and badassery. And be $4,000 poorer at the end of the day.

Also before swapping in any new engine you will prolly have to replace the timing belt/water pump, spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor rotor/cap and other tune up oriented stuff or most motor-sellers won't endorse the warranty on the engine.

Best place to buy JDM engines I think unanimously is HMO, or Specializing in JDM-USDM Engines & Parts...hmotorsonline.com
A bit more expensive, but supposedly bar none in terms of quality.
