thinkin bout buying a miata, what do u think?

I always thought there were a girl car but i took my prelude to a autocross race and was getting smoked by these cars all day lol. I think i might keep the lude for a dd and buy a miata for a track car. Any of you guys own miatas? What do u think bout them?

Re: thinkin bout buying a miata, what do u think?

i take out my mom's '01 6 speed miata whenever i want. that thing on stock suspension out-handles my slammed car anyday of the week because 1) they're light as fuk, and 2) have perfect 50/50 weight distribution. its such a fun little car to toss around i love driving it.

but yes when i go autocrossing, half the cars are miatas, s2k's, and porsches, cuz they're all light, RWD, and well balanced cars. but, those aren't the main reasons why your getting beat. the MOST important thing when autocrossing to get better times isn't to upgrade to a better engine, suspension, or car. SEAT TIME will drastically reduce your lap times. you just need to practice, practice, practice, and your times will go down, i promise you that. so don't give up hope in the prelude, cuz they're still very strong autocrossing cars, you just need to keep practicing.

Re: thinkin bout buying a miata, what do u think?

Guy at the club by me has a CSP Miata with 275 wide Hoosier R6's. Seats bolted to the frame, that car feels just like a formula car. Amazing car, still can't out pax the ST civic 3door of dave-O tho.

Re: thinkin bout buying a miata, what do u think?

I used to agree, Miatas are for girls and "mid-life crisis" guys. But the fact is, they're cheap, RWD, light as sin, and can kick some ass when built right. Go for it man! Sad, simple truth is they're a GREAT starting platform. Consider a old nissa 240sx tho. They're not as light but they are RWD and have a lot of potential too! They're certainly better lookin' (in my opinion).

Re: thinkin bout buying a miata, what do u think?

^^But the RPS13 chassis is nasty, and while yes they have a lot of potential, you'll have to spend thousands on suspension to get to where the Miata/MX5 is from the factory.

I say go for it. I don't like the look of them, and yes they do have the image of being a girl/hairdresser/mid life crises car, but they are one of the purest driving sensations on the market today. Recently a local magazine did a back to back test of the three models and said while the NC (current model) was the fastest around their test track they thought the NB (2nd gen, first with fixed headlights) was actually the better car.

Having said all that, twokex is right - the Prelude is a great autocross car, and underestimated by all. Remember that a dd and a track car means two lots of registration, insurance and running costs (not to mention the requirement for a second parking space at home). You could save the second set of running costs and dump the second car fund into the Prelude (or if you prefer into the Mazda) and have one helluva track weapon that can be used daily.

Re: thinkin bout buying a miata, what do u think?

I know in a year I might look in to buying one but I'm still not sure what I want, either an s2000, rsx or to find a 5th gen hatch, I'm most likely going to get the hatch though. I love that car.

Its a tough call but I think Brash is right when saying the money you are about to put into a purchase of another car could possibly improve the the lude even further. Personally I always have that feeling when seeing other cars "like wow that Del Sol looks great" or Damn that S2000 looked sexy but
at the end of the day I just realize that the money I would use to buy those cars and put for insurance and all of that would make the prelude even better.

Re: thinkin bout buying a miata, what do u think?

haters... don't dis on cars you don't "care for" unless it's based on some fact...

my dad has a 06 mx5.. (not a "girl's miata":wink). I take it out on the weekends sometimes and it is fun as hell to drive... tiny steering inputs (like the s2k), great gas mileage (30mpgs is the draw over the rx-8... plus the price)... and I love every minute in that stock machine... handling comparable to much more expensive cars...

now as far as what you should do... do what you want... as said the lude is a great FWD autox car... invest time and money in it and you will have a great car... if you want the RWD the mx5 is a great option... it actually handles more predictably than the s2k, in my opinion... and I have driven both...

The Prelude is a great car to have in GS right now since the mini S is in DS and the pax multis are fixed. Plus in GS you get to play with Rcomps

mostly ALL the miatas around here that go autocrossing are stock, because they barely need any mods to be beating porsches, evo's, sti's, etc etc. because they're already a perfect handling car.
like i said, go to the track for yourself and witness it with your own eyes before immediately jumping on the haterade bandwagon just to be e-cool

I was really thinking about putting all of my money into one car for insurance reasons and not having two cars but im just worried about breaking something out on the track and being out of a ride (im still in college and i have a part time job). Also im worried that even if i put a buncha money in the lude i still dont see it handling like even as good as a stock miata, the weight distribution on our cars is 63/37 thats way off of 50/50

Then get a 4G! Weight distribution is much better than on the 5G.

My girlfriend's cousin is selling a Miata for like $2500... This thread is making me consider it lol.

Re: thinkin bout buying a miata, what do u think?

Hmm...guess I'm the only guy really qualified to answer this one, because I own both cars, and have autocrossed both in stock form. Frankly, both cars are a blast. The only reason I retired the Prelude from competition is because at 230,000 miles, it needs some work to keep slamming it around like that. Plus I was ready for a change. It may come back at some point, especially since the Cooper S has gone to D Stock where it belongs.

To be honest, though, the SCCA classing structure is kinder to Miatas. The NA cars pretty much own E Stock. NB cars are still competitive regionally (and even nationally in the right hands) in C Stock, athough they're not shoo-ins as before. The new NCs are also CS contenders. If you want to modify it, go for an NA car and set it up for STS.

Unfortunately, it's tough autocrossing a modified Prelude. They're regionally competitive in ST, but still one of the heavier cars there, so it's an uphill battle. Not competitive at all in DSP, again just due to being classed with lighter cars.

Bottom line: take your pick -- you'll have fun with either. If you have the cash, have fun with both. I am.
