ran at the track tonight limp mode 3rd gear need the expertise

tonite was the first time i even hit vtec with my new h22 all i must get used to the swap is a h22a with the stock (s model) f22 tranny eventually i will turbo it so the longer gears are a must but until then i need to fix some of the issues my car pulls strong and great hits vtec 1st and second gear fine but vtec is tuned for 5k and in 3rd @ 6k my Check engine light pops up and limp mode kicks in leaving me at granny speed lol need to know my problem or if anyone has expirenced this same thing ecu is pheaerable tuned p28 thanks all comments welcome!

also with my h22a, f22 trans, intake and exhaust running a 15.5 soes this sound reasonable with the F series tranny bc i was unsatisfied with this time lookin at others times but i got terriable wheel hop and in 2 runs i bogged down horriably but please let me know from pearsonal expirence if this is ok with my set up with this tranny thanks!

With the F22 tranny that's not bad. But as far as your problem....it's odd. Who tuned your car? Sounds like it could be a problem with the tune, or a VSS problem. Odd that it only happens once you get to 3rd gear, but 1st and 2nd are fine.

Bad fuel possibly, Had a similar problem once when I had a Renault before I got honda (dare I say that swear word on here) put some bad fuel in and it didnt feel right, refilled at another petrol station , light disappeared and it ran fine. Until something else went wrong.

I love Renault hatchbacks...just never see them here in the states. But that's a good point, could very well just be a bad batch of gas.

Re: ran at the track tonight limp mode 3rd gear need the expertise

gotta be the problem man well i hope when i had my beater f22 with 235k miles i seldomly put in premium but latley with my last fill went cheap after i put the h22 in it had half a tank then filled the rest up with premium plus fuel injector cleaner so after this batch of gas ill get octane booster plus premium see how she does and problem solved i sure hope its that but phearable tuned it for a base map on a p28 he seems pretty knowledgeable and reputable i hope its fuel!!

and thanks man after i break in the clutch ill go all out at the track but i still have another 500 miles lol i get my license back in a week so ill come to a conclusion soon enough lol

Re: ran at the track tonight limp mode 3rd gear need the expertise

guys unfortunatley it isnt the problem it still goes into limp mode after shell premium with octane booster :/ so stuck again i need to diagnose the CEL but blew my interior light fuse trying could this be bc i had the car running ( i know your not suppose to do this but if i turn my car off it resets the code so i just tried to do it so i didnt have to speed again but should i reset the ecu by pulling the clock/radio fuse bc some how i feel like its the ecu its self

Re: ran at the track tonight limp mode 3rd gear need the expertise

bump still havein the problem wish i had a p13 ecu to see if the problem is in the ecu its self but i ran the CEL before and after limp mode and at both times it came up as code 20 (ELD) electric load detector. from asking around and others expirence they said a bad eld wouldnt throw a car into limp mode also my car has no signs of a faulty eld holds perfect charge and no weird idle what so ever i deffinitly need some expertise bc having this issue is one of my biggest upsets to this date! but please all suggestions are welcome and thanks for the help im also considering replacing the fuse box just to see if it is the eld itself bc one at the junk yard is only 15 dollars but if it was actually faulty or damaged i believe id be having these symptoms but please i need the expertise asap im stuck in the middle of no where with this now!

Re: ran at the track tonight limp mode 3rd gear need the expertise

ok guys i know this thread is so old but i wanna make sure if anyone runs into this specific problem they can atleast get info from my mess. i finally decided to mess with it in the past week to fix this chronic prolonged problem it continiously would hit limp mode at top of 3rd and consistently be code 20 (eld) i ended up cancelling everything besides the fact of it possibly being either a bad ground, a bad eld its self, ecu/tune, fuel, critical/misc. sensors and so forth. i cancelled out the fact of a bad eld simply bc the symptoms to eld malfunction would presist and all was fine. fuel preasure was ok and after i ran all my fuel out from when i swapped it i put premium in and hasnt seen anything other than premium since, how ever the problem still occured. it possibly being a bad ground could lie anywhere i thought so imade this my last assumption in the past week so i wanted to cancel out the ecu/program. so i went to the local performance shop and got a p28 tuned on crome and then a simple basemap (just like my phearable) ... this time no eld cel. but at the top of 3rd my CEL would pop up came up as code 22. (vtec preasure switch) jdm h22a motors did not have the specific preasure switch as p28 civics did. then the shop said shoot we forgot to delete it.... so once he deleted all the necessary options to have my h22a running optimal i test drove and all was fine. the origonal phearable ecu did have a slight burnt awkward smell so i was crossing my fingers. and fortunatley enough to my luck my prelude has offocially pulled through 3rd gear nice and strong and i gotta say i am in love with the car now and cannot wait to turbo it already. this problem has neglected the fact of getting on it (which is a good thing) but i just felt so down about it but finally nothing and am so happy i fixed it!

if you are running into this problem my list of assumptions should not at all be overlooked. i reviewed and reviewed and all of these were possibilities from others one that was the closest to my specific problem and could relate was a ba ground but before searching for that specific ground try to borrow a friends ecu on a h22a basemap/dyno tune. but until then i hope this helps anyone with in the years that encounters the biggest head ache ever. cheers to all!
