Icon8 NEED HELP...Smogging my Turbo Prelude in LAME CA???

Im so pissed about this BS...

Is this even gonna be possible? Some of you guys have seen my car and turbo setup that I recently picked up (and which I'm very happy about...) but I just found out that the grace period between the previous owners last smog inspection and the sale has passed, so now I need to get it smogged AGAIN. Problem is, he said he had a buddy hook him up but he's not around anymore (or some nonsense like that) so he could pass, and I have no clue how I can get this car registered now.

A friend who saw the setup said there's not a snowball's chance in hell it will pass...even if it did pass the emissions test I guess I'd get sent to a state referee for a visual inspection since its a non-OEM turbo car, and I'd get hammered on there. This has me so irritated I'm thinking about just reselling this damn thing CA is the gayest state in the union, and only about 1% of that statement has anything to do with cars...dont even get me started

So WTF can I do about this?

Re: NEED HELP...Smogging my Turbo Prelude in LAME CA???

as a "still registered" car inspector let me tell you the system has changed and you are no longer allowed even one fail point now and its all registered by VIN its hard to just "pass a car"(inspector in harris county TX we have the same standards as CA)
what set up are you running engine turbo EMISSIONS PARTS!!! ect......i'll throw what advice i can ur way.

Re: NEED HELP...Smogging my Turbo Prelude in LAME CA???

ROCKtavius, thats not actually a bad idea and is sorta what I've been doing...everyone I've talked to has been helpful, or at least sympathetic, lol. I wont say any more than that

PRELUDE209, I'm actually considering that...I may strip the car of the whole turbo kit and sell it, or just sell the whole car out of state so someone can actually enjoy it cause I'd rather not start pulling it apart. I'd take $7K for the car and $2K for the turbo kit (GReddy kit w/Intercooler.) But this really is a last resort for me. PM me.

RANGER11X, you are the enemy!!! Just kidding, actually thanks for the input, my kit is a GReddy 18G turbo kit with intercooler with a custom dual exhaust, but the cats are intact. I bought the car under the impression that 1) the kit was CARB legal, and 2) the previous owner had just gotten it smogged. In fact, CARB's website makes no indication of any street legal turbo kit (although there are several for other cars like Civics & Integras, etc.), and I found out later the last owner "had the hookups", and I'd still need to get it smogged again because of the transfer of title. Beyond that, I'm terrified that I'll get sent to a State Ref because there are other issues with the car, ie. headlight/taillights mods, suspension mods, etc...and I DONT wanna get caught up dumping money into this car for that BS. Thats why as much as I hate to do it, if it comes to that, I'll sell the car ASAP and lick my wounds later. I dont need the stress!

Re: NEED HELP...Smogging my Turbo Prelude in LAME CA???

OK i did not know there were other mods and such you will prob have to look for "the hook up" I may have hypothetically "helped" a few people with modified cars when i was inspecting cars in tx but its no easy task and there is alot riding on getting caught doing such a thing. BUTTTTT since you have duel exaust and active cats that does work in your favor. smogging checks for NOX and CO2 and hydrocarbons(having the inspector use the least flowing exaust tip for the probe would help) also check out ur tune because the inspector will also connect a data cable to ur obdII port while smogging ur vehicle to look for any anomalies (cel.deleted codes.. ect) also make sure all of ur emission parts are squeaky clean and in proper working order this will help also if you have a boost controller lower boost as much as possible and try to go get the test done with your engine as cold as possible(hopefully you dont have to do the smog test while on the dyno and try to stay out of boost before you go in) i believe you have two trys to have your car inspected in CA you pay the first time and if you fail the second one is free within 15 days. I could tell you how to "trick" the machine into letting you pass (OBDII is easy enough in certain cases) but not having the privilege of inspecting a boosted H22 i cant be certan plus you are not the one doing the inspection. Anyways if you are unable to get the car done by paying the "extra" fee to the inspector get the inspection and post the results if you fail (nox emission levels co2 emission level ect...) and im sure the PZ family will have something for you

PS go with about a half a tank IDK why but in my experience emission levels are always cleaner than with a full or almost empty tank

Re: NEED HELP...Smogging my Turbo Prelude in LAME CA???

ok good luck but beware you must go to the same place both times for the inspection don't go one place then another if you find someone to pay to pass your car it will raise a red flag on you and the inspector. if you fail twice however you are only out the cost of the inspection and are free to go where ever.
