Tach keeps jumping like mad, Fixed it with new dizzy, but problem is back

Hey guys, So I've had this tach problem, where the rpms nuts when you reach high rpms ( like over 4k), it didnt affect the engine though. Until recently, it started to jerk the car. I heard it could be the ICM inside the distributor, so I exchanged the remanfactured dizzy from pepboys with another one.

The problem was fixed, tach is good and accurate again. But 3 days later its back again. The tach is bouncing around when I'm cruising at 3k itll jump up to 4k and sometimes higher, sometimes lower, and when you floor it itll shoot up to 9k rpms, but its not affecting the ride 'yet'...

Pepboys manager told me that when they remanufacture dizzys, they don't change out the ICM's in them, so the problem will come back. Just wondering if anyone knows anything about this. Do I really have to buy a new ignition control module?.. i bought a "new" distributor in hope for no problems, yet it only fixes the situation temporarily.. wtf!

anyway, I just forked over money for a new ignition coil ( $85), also found a loose ground wire, the one thats attached to the valve cover, that didn't fix the problem. So I went back and bought a new ICM ( $95) and replaced my old one. Everything is good again, but the question is, how long will this ICM last =/

Guess I'll just keep the new coil also, just in case my old coil was "messing up" my ICMs somehow. If that's possible.

I wonder if my car is running extra hot and that's why my ICMs die, because I heard when you block the EGR the engine temperatures increase..

Try checking the battery terminals, I just recently Brought A Prelude. Got back home and the battery was fried, garage said the battery just needed charging anyway I fitted a new battery, not realising one of the terminals was a little bit loose and my rev counter was doing wired things just as you describe and car was acting wired, i panached thinking It wasn't the battery but something more major thought id been ripped of for that moment in time (I was wrong!!!). However it turned out to be the Live terminal slightly loose, needed tightening and some grease and It has been fine ever since, not a single problem. Does the radio also cut out when this occurs? thats another thing which happened to me when I had a similar problem such as yours.

some good info for others that might need this fix, thanks =) I purchased a new ICM, this is what sends the tach signal FOR cars with obd1. It's been a week now.. It's still working as should, and its been crazy hot out.I put an extra huge glob of that heat insulating silicone between the icm and dizzy lol for a peace of mind, glad it hasn't died yet.

I'm guessing the pepboys manager wasn't lying when she said remanfactured dizzys reuse the ICM and don't put new ones in.. because i've gotten 2 reman'd dizzys from them with bad ICMS.

my only problem left is that my spark plugs fouling up because im running so rich.. need a tune for my p28 i guess lol

I have the same problem on the 3rd gen. Do I also need to replace my ICM?
