Icon5 How far to drop 5th gen?

I have a 5th gen and im considering lowering it. Its my daily driver BUT, I will be taking it on an occasional track day at VIR (Virginia International Speedway) and was wondering how low some of you have dropped your 5th gen prelude and how the ride is. Any information would be helpful. I was also wondering if the quality of the spring matters. I planned on buying ebay coilovers (springs) due to the fact that my friend bought them for his car and decided that the quality of the spring was the same as all other springs. But you know how those damn civic guys are. anyway, PLEASE give me any and all information on how low to lower mt 5th gen............................................... .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ..............UPDATE: An update to my previous statement. I Planned on putting the springs on STOCK struts. So the question i should have asked is how far can i safely lower the car on stock struts.

Re: How far to drop 5th gen?

The answer is not very. Stock struts tend to bottom out (read: the inner tube hits the end of the outer tube) when lowered springs are fitted to them. This causes them to leak, and a really crappy, bumpy and crashy ride. So the ride quality (on a scale of 1-10) would rate about 2.6

I say this all the time - do not skimp on the quality of your suspension. It is the only thing keeping your tyres on the road (or track), and indeed more importantly, the only thing keeping the car above the road.

There's no nice way of saying this, but your friend is a dick head.

If you want to lower your car, do it properly with name brand products. If you cannot afford good quality suspension parts, leave the standard parts in there until you can.

Re: How far to drop 5th gen?

How about stock springs on aftermarket struts? I have the Koni yellows with stock springs and moved the snap ring to the lower position. They advertise 3/4" lower front and 1/2" lower in the rear. No camber kits. It sits with about 1* positive on all wheels after alignment.

I've had this setup for years and find the ride just fine. Just mess with the adjustable dampening till you don't bottom out.

I don't know if I would go much lower. I drive rural highway and roadkill is a problem. I can pass over most opossum but a raccoon? Nope.

I love the way the car feels and looks. I have an aftermarket set of sway bars and every rubber suspension component that can be replaced by Energy Suspension stuff, replaced by it. Including bump-stops.

Re: How far to drop 5th gen?

i dunno i'm running on stock struts, with ground control coilovers. and like the front i'm down almost as far as i can(have like another quarter inch farther i can go. and the back have like a inch or so before i'm completely lowered as far as i can. been like that for about 2 years now, and still rides great.. on the oem original struts.... just saying

Re: How far to drop 5th gen?

Ok after reading several comments and a number of other posts and threads i have decided to just save up and do it right. but that brings up the big $$$ question. If i were to do it right around how much would it cost? camber kits and all minus the alignment?

Re: How far to drop 5th gen?

I agree wit everyone who said coilovers. U dnt jus wanna buy springs. I made that move before I got my coilovers and I regret it. Yes it gave the car a nice drop but ride wise, it was horrible. I had skunk2 springs on the stock kyb struts and the car was OD bouncy, my front end was smashing the ground everytime I hit a small bump so imagine and big bump lol. Best bet is go wit coilovers. Everysince I put on my ksports, I luv my car even more, and they adjustable so u can drop or raise the car to however u feel comfortable wit

I paid $860 for my ksport coilovers. That's for a 4th gen, it might be alil less or more for a 5th gen idk. Then get sum Ingall balljoint cambers for like $126 for the front and a while alignment is like $50 at a mechanic shop. So near $1000 but it will all be worth it trust me

Re: How far to drop 5th gen?

I got lucky as hell getting Koni Yellow coilovers with ground control springs +rear sway bar from a friend for $700 cad cause he was parting out his lude (bought an S2K). Like JDMPrelude23 said you're looking at somewhere in the range of $1000+ depending on what parts you get where but it's definitely worth doing right. Also if you plan on going more than 75% stiffness for coilovers the ride quality deteriorates but it does get grippy as fuq in the corners (feels like i'm cornering on rails)
