New engine build up, need some input

I have an 01 SH. Motor is a piece, and I don't feel like dealing with it, so I'm replacing it with a JDM H22a blacktop.

I should have about $2500 to start with, before I buy the engine. After I get it, I plan on replacing the water pump/timing belt and swapping the manual tensioner on my old engine (if it has one) to my new engine, or buying a new one if it doesn't. After that I really don't know what else to do, I've heard replacing alot of the old seals (like cam oil seal, dizzy oil seal, etc) is a good idea, but I don't know which to do, and I need to know what I've gotta buy.

After that I will probably replace the old clutch with a oem replacement, I have to replace at least one of the old strut rods (radius rod) and I will replace the old fuel filter. I also want to do a valve lash adjustment on the new engine (cuz it'll be a used engine) and perhaps get a lightweight flywheel and possibly a catback exhaust.

I've also been thinking about doing an oil catch can but that can wait til after the engine is in, so can the exhaust if it comes down to it. I also have to get an alignment once I replace the strut rod, as the bent one is really messing with my alignment.

Does anyone have any input on this setup? Does it sound like I'm going in the right direction? I plan on keeping it N/A, and that $2500 is all I have to spend, and I have about 4-5 weeks to get everything and get it in, which is going to be tough as it is.

What can I get at autozone/advanced auto and what do I need to order? Would Honda or after market be a good choice for some of this, like the timing belt and water pump kit?

I did the math, (rough estimate, like really rough) and figured this out.
2500 to start
-1300 for engine
-100 timing belt/water pump kit
-200 flywheel
-200 clutch kit
-100 misc costs (fuel filter, seals, etc)
-500 exhaust
-100 strut rod

Which pretty much leaves me broke. I guessed all costs, so my math is prolly off, but does it sound about right? If not, let me know, I might have to forgo an exhaust til later, although I really don't want to.

Re: New engine build up, need some input

I just called the place I was looking to buy my engine from (JDM Engine Zone) and he said they didn't have any H22a's in stock at the moment, does anyone know anyone else reputable to get an engine from? Like reputable enough to where I could just order it and don't have to worry about handpicking it?

Thanks for any help given.

Re: New engine build up, need some input

If you want a top notch engine in extremely good condition, it only has 45k km on the clock, go see Nick at Elite Imports International in Philly. One of the best guys ive ever delt with. And he personally goes to Japan and hand selects his cars to bring over. He'll even start the engine up for you, rev it, and do a compression/leakdown test on it if you ask. give him a call. 215-725-0490

Re: New engine build up, need some input

Right now I'm looking into hmotorsonline, I've heard alot of good things, and only one bad thing. The research I did on tigerjapanese and jdm engine depot is not looking too good. Some people say its good, some people make a point to inform everyone on every forum they can find to let people know they suck.

I've heard one or two things about the places in philly like elite imports and such...have to research them next.

Re: New engine build up, need some input

One of the problems I'm having is that if I don't get this engine swapped by the end of June where I go back out to college, I won't have another chance til I graduate. I don't have the tools, time or space needed to do it up there. However I'm trying not to rush into buying something I'll be dissapointed with, like my car...which is why I have to do a swap in the first place.

Re: New engine build up, need some input

Warren county. However I already have a place and a mechanic buddy of mine to help me, I just need a good engine to put in it, and all the stuff I need for it, before June like 11 or so, so I can put everything in by June 27, when I leave to go back to ohio.

Which really sucks cuz I don't have much time to shop around, and I really don't want to end up with a junk engine like the one thats in there again.

Thanks for the offer though, that was really unexpected but appreciated lol.

Unless you're getting another SH or Type S motor, you'll need a new, non ATTS transmission

No, just a H22a... I don't believe I need a non-sh trans, people have said it will work fine. The atts has to do with the trans it doesn't connect to the engine at all, as far as I know.

Im not completely positive but I've heard that the sh trans will not bolt up to anything other than another sh motor or type s. Hold on. Gonna try to find a link for ya.

Edit: This isnt exactly what I was looking for but it should help u out. And it was just posted a couple months ago too!! Lol

SH motor to regular h22 motor(usdm)

Wow so even if I wanted to do an engine swap I couldn't? I may have to go the other route...

Re: New engine build up, need some input

Ok, I was just checking out Jspec auto parts, which sells engines, and looked up the installation info. Apparently the H22a engine will not work with the ATTS model.

Now I'm wondering...if I get a non-sh trans, can I then install the H22a?

Also, does anyone know if Jspec auto parts is a good company? They seem legit.

Also, will a compression test really tell you if an engine is good or not? What if the compression test is positive but the engine is still weak?

no one has said that. if you get an SH engine, you'll NEED an SH tranny. if you buy a base engine, you'll need a base tranny.

mehh, personally i'd stick with the tried and true sites such as HMO, especially for something as big as an engine.
yes, a compression test tells alot about the condition of the piston rings, headgasket, and valve seals/seats.

Re: New engine build up, need some input

Well my car is an SH, and has a H22a4 in it, and I'm going to assume it has an SH tranny. I want to get a JDM H22a, because my only other options would be another H22a4 or a H22a Type S, which I don't want and the other is too expensive, respectively.

And I was looking at HMO, the problem is they are just too expensive. I couldn't even afford an engine from them much less an engine and trans. They want like 2,500 for a H22a, whereas pretty much every other site wants like 1200, which is do-able.

Re: New engine build up, need some input

eh. my opinion dont go cheap;
might be like 1200, but something can go wrong.. and then you lose that 1200. HMO is pretty much legit hands down.. i mean if you put more money towards the engine; chances are it'll be worth it. if you found a cheaper one, and that blows.. you gotta start off again. I had a driver come up to me and ask if its h22, I told em yes, he told me about a guy selling his for 500. lol; I mean, then again I could be wrong. nothing might not be wrong with it. so it goes both ways.. lol.

Re: New engine build up, need some input

Yea I hear ya, but I simply don't have the cash for it. And I've heard the average price for a JDM engine is about 1,200-1,500...I also don't want to spend double that and have everyone sayin wow you overpaid for your engine just like you overpaid for your car. And as I found out with my car, just because you shell out more money doesn't always mean its gonna be good.

But hey, everything has exceptions. My biggest thing is I I'm gonna have like 2,500 to 3 grand to spend on this tops, and thats not just engine and trans but my strut rods, fuel filter, prolly FPR, timingbelt/water pump too...

So ya I simply cannot afford a $2,500 engine with another $400 shipping ontop of it, then having to buy a trans to make it work. I wish I did but I just don't.

2500 huh?
http://www.hmotorsonline.com/shop/sc...age&item=30016

And that comes with a tranny. That's everything you need, besides a ECU.

EDIT: Nevermind about needing an ECU. It comes with one.....

Re: New engine build up, need some input

dood just save the time and cash bro and get the SH motor and do a little more mods with the left over money to compensate for the reason you want the JDM motor. not that big a diff. imo. it seems you dont have the time to shop n save before school.

but hey nevermind if thats what you want then i shouldnt have said anything my bad.

Re: New engine build up, need some input

Really? You could prolly get away with a sex doll filled with warm water. Just ventroloquist that **** so she seems more lively.

On a more serious note however, how much would an engine from Honda cost? $6000? lol thats pretty much what I paid for the car...

And that comes with a tranny. That's everything you need, besides a ECU.

EDIT: Nevermind about needing an ECU. It comes with one.....
That's great and all...but thats a 92-95 motor. My car is an 01
