Icon5 91 sR - Burns oil excessively & rpm's high? HELP!

Hey guys,

My 91 sR is starting to burn oil excessively. I will top it up with oil on a monday, then come thursday or friday it will be right at the bottom of the oil dip stick.

There are no leaks from under the car, there is a lot on the engine itself though. I just noticed also that at the back of the car there's a lot of oil around the exhaust.

My dad is a mechanic & he said he's going to take the engine apart on friday, but I'm wondering if anyone can give me a heads up on what they think it might be or if anyone else has had this experience. (My dad is old school, he doesn't check the net)

Also... this is a different subject. Is it irregular if my rpm are around 4k at 120kph (74mph)? My girlfriends integra sits at 3k around those speeds. My sR is a 5speed if that has anything to do with it also.

Anyways, any help or advice with these two concerns of mine would be awesome!

Thanks, J

Not sure if this helps also, but I mainly drive highway. So that car is mainly driven between 3.5k rpm and 4k rpm.

Ahh, did some more research online. Supposedly it could be the piston rings?

Re: 91 sR - Burns oil excessively & rpm's high? HELP!

Hey thanks for the quick response.
So far for a check list of things to replace while my dad has the engine apart I got:

- Timing Belt
- Piston Rings
- Cam Shaft Seals
- Valve Seals ? (twokexlv6coupe's recommendation)

Anything else you guys can think of? Trying to get most of the maintenance done while he's got time.

Other things should be replaced while you're in there doing the timing belt. Water pump, balancer belt, and some other crap I can't remember. Someone else will chime in.

Re: 91 sR - Burns oil excessively & rpm's high? HELP!

I got this one......

b21 motors have what you call "fiber-reinforced metal (FRM)" piston sleeves, 91 preludes with the b21a1 was the first trial for this technology,.. needless to say, they needed to make improvements.. no need to look any further, you have just found out the cause...... just look it up on the net..... very common topic

sorry, my 3rd gen brudda...., you will never be able to fix this, without replacing the piston sleeves, or motor swap..

since you and your dad have it apart..., now is the perfect time to have the sleeves replaced..., ask 1funryd if the b20 sleeves will fit....

The sleeve is so strong, in fact, that it wears out the piston rings causing low compression numbers, severe smoking, and high oil usage.
So wouldn't I just have to replace the piston rings? Or... would you have to replace both the sleeve and the rings? (Not a mechanic)

Yes, but they would wear out again over time.

For the price of sleeving you could probably get a whole new motor honestly though. Sleeving is anything but cheap. Although if you got a new motor...you'd run into the same problem sooner or later. This is quite a conundrum. Fuggin' 3G's.

Uhg, wtf... that sucks.
How long would you expect it to take to wear out again?

The piston rings are cheap right?

Re: 91 sR - Burns oil excessively & rpm's high? HELP!

I pretty sure that the piston rings would last for a while...

unless you never changed the oil, and drive the car like you stole it.., you should be fine... I have never had a problem with piston rings in all my cars....

the sleeves are the main issue here..., you are definately at a crossroads on what to do now

like stated above, having the sleeves replaced is no simple and cheap task.... unless you know somebody personally who can do it for cheap.. doing a motor swap would be easy...

you don't have to go all out with swap either, there are still b20a motors on the net that you can get anywhere from 100 to 800 bucks.. or at junk yards.. then you can have all the room you need to prep motor before swpping... plenty of help here for you also...

I know these damn 3rd gens pretty good

Alright, I'll end up talking to my dad about it and see if he's up for the work involved. If he's not I'll probably just selling the car & get something more reliable (I had the car for a total of 2 months... psh).

I just sold my mustang gt so I got some money to roll with lol. 10.5k
