Icon2 Need opinion on engine swap.

There is a person in my town wanting to sell a H22a Vtec for pretty cheap. One thing though, its coming out of an automatic Civic and my Prelude is a 5 speed. I don't know that much about swapping. If it would be easy, cheap for extra parts ect.

The other thing is some of my friends are telling me that the stock H23 with 260,000 mi. on it has more potential if I rebuild it. I would like to know which would be easier and more cost affective, also with future add ons??

Any feedback is appreciated.

transmission doesn't really matter there is a post somewhere on the internet to make it where the ECU doesn't throw a CEL for the transmission. take it from someone that just went through the headache of my first swap. took over 20 hours with my buddy that has done it before and i'm still finding things that we messed up. It is totally worth it if you have the time though. If you don't have access to a fully stocked shop i wouldn't attempt it though. if you plan on turboing later you might as well stick with the h23. in my opinion your going to notice a lot more pep from a lighter flywheel than swapping to a h22a.

few tips: replace every vacuum line and water hose while the motor is out, any motor mount that doesn't look new go ahead and replace it, i broke my front mount within 2 days of the swap. make sure the h22 has the engine wire harness and the ecu. you going to need the h22 exhaust manifold. its not something i could have done by myself for sure. and the most important one..... if your knuckle assembly doesn't want to go together don't jump on the brake rotor to mash it together i bent a pin in my axle and it woobles now.

If your planning on boosting in the future, i would stick with the H23 and rebuild it. If your going N/A and still want some strong power, i would go with the H22. The H23 has a lower compression ratio so it will respond to boost better, however, the H22 responds better to bolt on's than the H23.

thanks for the feedback, I went and took a look and the condition the motor is in. Its not too bad however. The oil cap was off for at least 3 months, not sure if that would effect much, i know i would probably have to take the cover off and clean out the head really good not sure though.
