btw whats the solution for feathering? this thread needs the problem, a funny side note (too lighten the burden of depression LOL), and a solution! thanks alot!

guys if there is more let me know and like i said in the first post, all info will be looked at and then added to the list. this is just to help out all luders and maybe those "other" cars hahaha
Feathering usually occurs when you never rotate your tires. Beyond just helping the tires wear evenly, if you don't rotate them, they start to develop those ridges and they just get progressively worse. By the time you can actually see feathering though, the best - (read ONLY if you love your car) course of action is to replace them. So yah, rotations every 10,000 km is the only way to prevent feathering from happening. And once it happes, you're too far gone.

Re: ALL the reasons WHY your wheels vibrate...

What about broken/damaged engine mounts.......causes a vibration that feels like out of balance wheels

There are two types of balancing, dynamic and static. I won't go into detail but most modern balancers (like hunter) do both, and you need both. Any rotating part on your car is balanced so it doesn't cause a wobble, and your tires are no exception. This is a must.

First off, ONLY check your tires when they are cold. This means that in the last hour you have driven less than 1 mile. Why? Because when they are hot, your air pressure goes up, and you won't get an accurate reading. Also, never inflate to the max load number, your psi should be at least 5psi below that when cold.

This is where balancing your tires comes in handy. Even if your rims are bent and they can't get the tire balanced properly, they can always forcematch the rim, which means they rotate the rim inside the tire to better balance it. Sometimes though this is not possible (really bent rims) so you need new ones.

You should ALWAYS do a 4 wheel alignment. The front tires follow the rears (yes, it's true) so if your rear toe is off it will throw off your alignment angles, even if your front was just aligned. If you align a car, you always align the REAR FIRST. If you align the front, and then do the rear, when you check the alignment of the front again it WILL be off spec. Like I said, the front tires follow the rear, and if your thrust angle is off, your whole front will be off. Now, alignments are not a cure all by any means, but they are important, and can help in finding other problems.

You need to get an alignment after replacing ANY front end steering or suspension components, whether it's a ball joint or a strut rod.

Actually vibration in the steering wheel is probably more often caused by warped rotors, in which case you will feel it only when braking.

*below submitted by bb4 bkh*

Wheel bearings will cause nasty vibration and possibly noise, usually when turning.

Don't forget strut rods (radius rods) they control fore and aft movement on the tire on 5th gens, and are prone to bending because of scraping or bottoming out.

If you stick a pry bar or other utensile in between the pad and rotor and crank away, you will damage the pad/rotor. Also make sure you do a proper brake job, use grease where it needs it, and push the caliper piston back in with the bleed screw cracked. This makes it easier and prevents the nasty fluid around your brakes from getting to the sensitive ABS controller. Also, HANG YOUR CALIPERS, using copper wire or equivalent DO NOT let your calipers hang by the brake line. This could cause a tear on the line (inside) and will more than likely cause a blowout, among other things.

Feathing tires is caused by toe angle not being in spec. An alignment is due. But yes you do need to rotate your tires regulary.
I have learned a lot here. I thank you all who participated on this write up. From one who just want to throw stone over one's fence or just to tease one's butt to the IDIOT reader (like me:P) It's the brainstorming part of it that's really beneficial if not stoo-feed!
I am just wondering why treat the other gen(s) like it's a shot? Where we could be looking at them by extending a hand to get them poorly, half-baked, less-powered gen(s) to be more enjoyable for them and thanking them for being the ones to have it; not YOU, ME or US. I have a '96 Prelude VTEC and all I want is to enjoy it, wash it (like 3x a week? LOLs-kidding), do what others have done to theirs (if I can afford the expensiveness of it) and perhaps be able to come to a MEET so I can appreciate what I have more. And get whatever I can take from this kind of community and put it into good use - perhaps xfer it onto my kid.
Ok, 'nuff of this Siyet! I am no righteous... I just wanna be with you guys here and enjoy and learn.

i think a quick check that people could do for that is jack up the car and get the suspected wheel off the ground and check for play by trying to wobble/jiggle the wheel firmly. Top to bottom, and left to right. If u have any play thats the ol bearing. I cant imagine too many things could happen to the spindle, but it is there to go wrong.

Lol you could do that but its not always the bearings. Sometimes its bad upper or lower control arm balljoints. When the joints are weak they tend to shake like crazy

Re: ALL the reasons WHY your wheels vibrate...

heh, i know i resurrected the dead, but im going thru it right now, when i get close to 4000 rpm, and flooring it in 3rd, 4th,or 5th. I get the most unholy shake going on. The front begins to shake violently left 2 right when i enter the real powerband, this comes from the front right wheel, and works its way to the back of the car... scary ****, it even makes my tightly fastened dashboard wobble left to right. I never really push it too much, BUT, if i play with the gas and ease off and then ease it in i can go up to redline NP w/o making milkshakes for friends... its weird and very selective, i can count on it when merging onto highways.
Ball joint seems like a huge suspect, since it squeals like a pig.. i didnt consider it heavily, but with your 2nd opinion, that might nail it.. Somebody told me my squeak could be a broken spring, but id need a 2nd on that for sure..

Thanks for the input

Re: ALL the reasons WHY your wheels vibrate...

Nice thread, although I'm a little surprised to see BRAKE ROTORS WARPED not on the list.... when brake rotors get too thin/past the service limit they tend to get exxcesive warpage/runnout on the face, which in the front can cause a pedal pulsation, but in the REAR will cause your steering wheel to vibrate pretty badly on slowing down from high speeds.
