ecu problems

hi there
im having problems with converting from obd2 to obd1. heres what is happening, i wanted to convert to obd1 and have the car running all fine before i go turbo, once running fine as obd1 using a chipped p28 then i can complete my turbo build then pop in a base map turbo chip from pherable.net to get me about and then tuned.
i brought a chipped p28, it has a hondata s200 attached to it which i have unplugged, i assume once i remove the one small lead connected inside the ecu it then just is a normal chipped p28 ecu, right?
i then brought a conversion harness, it was the cheapest one i could find but i assumed its just a few wires so it wouldnt really matter.
now i brought a few chips, like i said these were just to get the engine working and running all ok before i go ahead with the turbo and then tuned. now all these chips and we are talking about 5 or 6 all made the engine run like crap and with the cel on continuously.
now i have a different chip and the engine seems to run fine other than two things, 1 the cel light is still on continuously, 2 vtec doesnt engage.
id like to find the problem because if its the ecu or the harness or something then its gonna throw a spanner in the works of my turbo plan.
any help id be very grateful for.
cheers
Rich

Re: ecu problems

ok question, do you already have a tuner lined up or in mind? because if so you should get a hold of him and have him put a base map on a chip for you, for your car.

as for you having problems with that ecu, it could just be that those chips arent set up for your engine, or even setup for vtec. just putting random "chips" in you potentially could really **** up your engine. cuz more then likely you dont know what set up each chip was tuned for. i mean you could get lucky have a chip already be set up pretty close to what you need, but on the opposite side, it could be way off from what you need(ie set up for boost when your runnin n/a)

realize though basemaps are exactly that, just a base. they arent meant to be driven a whole lot. realistically you should only use a basemap to get you to a tuner to have a full street/dyno tune done.

Re: ecu problems

ughhhhh IDK if undoing the s200 was such a good idea
especially then replacing it with (most likely) cheap ebay "chips" which are obviously making the car hardly run, if at all .

i'm telling you phearable knows their shiit when it comes to basemapping an ECU to make it start right up no problems. mine started up on the second crank after the turbo install.
honestly, if you haven't already screwed up the ECU and you can replace the s200 w/o any problems, i'm telling you don't even worry about converting the car to OBD1 first; the engine WILL run on the phearable basemap.

my F22 was originally OBD2 (yes, in an OBD1 car), then i did the turbo install AND converted to OBD1 at the same time, and she was running beautttifully (well, after i figured out that my idiot buddy switched 2 of the spark plug wires on the dizzy )

ya my thought as well, but i dunno to much about hondata. so kinda stayed away from that one.

and hahahahahah my buddy did that on his integra. sad thing was he didnt realize he did it for like 1000 miles of driving, or something stupid.

That's a very scary thing to read. "Just a few wires." Lawl. My advice (which sucks because I'm an idiot) would be to STOP driving the car around on random "basemaps", call around, do a little research, find a decent shop, and have them sort out your problem before you blow your **** up.

Re: ecu problems

ok well first of all thanks for the replies. also i understand about basemap being just a basemap, i have been reading alot of info many on this site for ages and dont consider myself a complete noob (altho i have my moments). i dont plan to be driving around with just a basemap controlling it for long at all, what i wanted to do is make sure the car will run once i have completed the turbo setup so i dont do all the hard work of turboing then to find out the ecu is pooped or i have the wrong conversion harness or something like that which then leaves my car undriveable, what i wanna be able to do is do the turboing work then unplug my obd2 ecu then plug my p28 ecu with the turbo chip from pherable in then drive to tuner.
twok i was told by the guy i brought the ecu from that all i needed to do was unplug the hondata s200 and then it will just become a normal chipped p28, although now u have me worried, can somebody confirm this please?
dbd6604 like i said and should probably have made clearer in my first post, i dont plan to drive around on any random basemaps for any great lengh of time, i understand what a basemap is, i just want to make sure that when i plug the turbo chip in after turboing then all will work and be driveable.
hope this all makes sense.

just curious, why not get the basemap(for hondata s200) from your tuner, he should be able to put it on any one of the chips you already have. most likely save your self some money and some time as well. just my .02
