no name brand Cold Air Intake

Was looking around eBay today for a cold air intake. Noticed some no name brands for really cheap and the name brands for about $200.00 more. Anybody know anything about these no name brands? Looks the same...tube, filter, fittings, etc. just doesn't have AEM or K&N stamped on it. Is there really a big difference? Seems like it would serve the same purpose i.e allowing large amounts of air in? Any thoughts on no name brand or should I just dump out $250.00 and get a name brand? I have a 97 base i picked up a month ago just to play around with.

Re: no name brand Cold Air Intake

You're on the right track. While some claim until their blue in the face that thir intake gave them 50hp at the wheels the most you'll ever get is maybe 10% of that. But they all serve the same fuction - filter the air then get it into your engine.

Having said that though if you buy a AEM intake you're paying for the research and development they put into it. When you pull it from it's box it will have detailed instructions and will all bolt in nicely. The no name brand might, I don't know.

For more detailed adiscussion search around and look in the rather unimaginatively named "Intake thread"

It doesn't allow in as much air. It's much more restrictive and doesn't resonate that "induction" sound.

Re: no name brand Cold Air Intake

Hah a pipe is a pipe. I got my ebay short ram for 7.99 and it came with all couplings, hoses, and clamps. Only thing is you have to custom mount the pipe bracket somewhere but you still don't even need that. The filter is all that matters.

Well if you remove the intake resonator from the front bumper (a mod you'll hafta do anyway to make use of a SRI, or to fit the filter in on a CAI) you get the noise. And as for restrictive, in a back to back dyno comparison the stock intake with K&N peformed better than almost every intake on the market. AEM V2 made the most power (but it wasn't much more than stock), stock was only a few tenths of a HP behind, and the rest behind again.

Those dyno charts are on here if you care to look for them.
