I would rather do a complete motor swap instead of doing a frankenstein h22/h23 hybrid.
It's not really about "pulling" harder.
It's about creating a hybrid motor that will not self destruct.
Think about it, h23 block that redlines at 6500ish and a motor h22 that redlines at 7500ish, you do math on work.
It has been done, but that's not a very popular swap IMO...

Now, a direct replacement JDM H22 motor should run you perhaps $1600?

Cost wise and it'll save you tons of money on aspirin.

welcome to the board!

An h23 vtec from the Accord SIR goes for $1,850 shipped to any where in the U.S.

oh yeah its spelled VTEC

anyway if you want to do the motor don't be discouraged as some people get the joy from the project itself not the end result.

a JDM h22a goes for $1,000 and you can do the swap on your own if your still looking for a project.

Personally I would swap a complete h22 in the car. If you want the torgue of the h23 and the power of Vtec. Take the Crankshaft out of the h23 get it balanced and put it in the h22 with the h23 rods and h22 pistons. But make sure to get the type-s 0versized pistons and put floating wrist pins in the rods. You will have a completely stock N/A monster with Vtec at 5500 rpms and 12.2:1 compression to back it up. You can also calculate how much horsepower you'll get from the build. For every .1 of compression increase= 1 wheel hp. so going from 9.8:1 -to- 12.2:1 = around 24 hp just off compression. Now you add I/H/E and it puts you in between 30-40 extra hp on top of the stock 200-220. Add crower stage 2 cams and a good tune and you got another 15-22 hp. I can go with this all day. But just do the complete H22 swap and be happy.

h22 head would be cheaper. But the compression would be below 10.0:1, which is stock compression for h22. Would need to change the pistons to make some power with it NA and that takes time.

h23vtec ftw

True cheaper at the beginning but in order for that to run successfully on a daily basis your gonna have to do alot to it. Specially seeing that the stock h23 crank will give out on you past 6500-7000, and the h22 head is gonna push it right up to 7500. So with that said you also gonna need the h22 oil squirters. And its so hard to find those its ridiculous. Plus the long list of stuff you have to change over with the head. Basically everything that touches the h22 timing belt.

who says the crank will give out on you? Get it balanced and you wont have any problems. Balancing of the crank, pistons and rods....along with micropolishing the crank ran me 240 dollars at my local machine shop. Not too shabby.

AllMotorRandy on HT is revving his "OEM" bottom end with h23 crank to 8500. Has been doing it for 2+ years now. Clearances are half the battle. H23vtec is not a hard swap. There really isnt all that much you have to do. I've spent about 500 dollars on brand new factory parts to make the change over. You can pick up oil squirters for like 50 bux from any wholesale honda dealer.

considering the badass deal i got on my setup, i really havent spent that much money on all the conversion parts. 340 dollars from honda for an oil pump, water pump, water pipe, main seal, oil pickup and misc gaskets and bolts. 100 dollars from a timing belt and the h23 timing conversion parts. You have to run the h22 crank timing gear, which can be had for about 40-50 bux from wholesale dealers.

Theres really not all that much involved with this hybrid. Its just a matter of BUILDING it correctly.

With the H23 crank, there aren't any clearance issues with the oil squirters?

i talked to Natalie at Blacktrax and she said they havent had any problems with clearance in the h23 block. I was always under the impression that they had to be bent out of the way, but apparently not. I'll be finding out soon as I go home (parents house) and get the oil squirters from my old motor.

^ you should do a write up, and post up some pics if you took them during your build. I wanna see the progression and the transformation.

Damn Blake, your build is gonna be a beast man.

I like to see a successful h23/h22 hybrid done correctly. Looks like you've got it down. I'm used to reading these motors self-destructing because of lubrication issues from the Accord kats who've done this.

What transmission are you mating to this anyway?

thats what im hoping for. 230+ would make me happy....higher...just added bonus.

I've got a friend of mine who is basically being my teacher while im doing this build. It's good to learn the correct way to build an engine.

gonna be using the non LSD JDM tranny for now. Eventually i'll have to get an LSD but i would really love to save that for when i attempt H2B (wayyy down the line)

The hybrid builds are really getting my attention. Like B said, I'm used to seeing so many just thrown together and then dying afterwards. Are you goin to leave the H23A1 engine stamp or grind it down and put your own custom stamp?

i'm ok for now. I'm sure it will confuse alot of people seeing an h23 stamp and VTEC, in big letters, sitting on top of each other.

?que? man, i can see it now.

The point I was trying to make is it will be less of a pain to just drop an h22 in instead of building an h23vtec and hoping he built it correctly.

Less pain, maybe. But with a H23 VTEC, built properly, you get props and personal accomplishment rather than just a buncha money spent on a motor to be like every other H22 Lude.

There's no such thing as a vtech head. There is also no such thing as a SOHC H22. There is only DOHC H22 VTEC heads. Whoever told you otherwise is sadly mistaking.
