Rookie needs HELP!! (please)

Howdy all,

Stone cold ROOKIE here...my first post. Bought a '96 Prelude (my first Honda) from a guy 3 weeks ago and have had some pretty bad luck (OK, it's not bad luck....I just messed up...ROYALLY!! Happy to share if anyone wants to hear the gory details).

The current problem I'm having with my '96 Prelude and I hoped someone else had already 'solved' this one.....

Headlights switch on but stay on High Beam. Switch on steering column goes 'click', but appears to take no action. Blue high beam indicator light stays on too. It appears that both the lo beam and the high beams are on. I think this is verified by the fact that the Battery light on the dash will flicker a little with the headlights on....like it's trying to pull more power than the car makes.

I pulled out the Dimmer Relay under the hood and see that even with the relay out, the high beams come on....this tells me that high beam is the default.

So I guess my questions are:

1. Does that Dimmer Relay under the hood switch between High and Low beam?
2. Can you think of anything else other than the steering column switch that may be a problem?
3. Anyone know any diagnostic tricks I might try?

Thanks,
Scott

OK....so just replace the whole unit on the steering column....I think the parts store said $80 or something like that....sound about right?

Also, do I have to pull the steering wheel to change this?

Thanks again,
Scott

Re: Rookie needs HELP!! (please)

yeah just replace that part on the column. that price sounds about right. just take the two screws off the cover and pop it off. the wheel does not have to be removed.

I have an issue with my van where it will intermitently send a signal to my front turn signal. so mine is shot too.

Re: Rookie needs HELP!! (please)

Well, that sucks!!! I just received my $86 steering column dimmer switch assembly....installed it....and.......................

I still cannot dim the headlights!!!!!!

The relay seems to be OK. It goes 'click' when it should. I checked across the control pins with the relay out and it shows 72 Ohms, which should be good. From the power pin, I only show continuity to one leg so that should be good.

What the heck is the deal here?....Gggrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I HATE electrical problems.
