My journey to the world of SYNTHETIC OIL.

Alright, so my 3000k oil change was coming up and i was thinking about switching to synthetic oil, my car has always used regular oil and with all the benefits ive heard about synthetic oil, i decided to make the switch. I was also switching to 10w30 from 5w30 because summer is coming up and it wont get below 0, or 32 for the americans here.

Now i know some of you will think " IS he crazy?, you cant switch to synthetic after 13 years of regular!!" but you are mistaken, its a common myth that switching is bad.

I needed to find a way to clean some of that gunk out that the regular oil left behind...... engine flushes are bad news, and i didn't wanna go straight to synthetic without SOME kind of cleanse..... HENCE......SEAFOAM.

I did the reuglar 1/3 in gas 1/3 in crankcase 1/3 in PCV. and what a diff it made! so i drove around with the seafoam mixutre in my crank for about 30 miles, which is a good distance to get the seafoam all up in there and remove atleast some gunk.

heres a vid of the seafoam in action, ignore the sound, iunno what happened. There was also ALOT more smoke than this, ALOT ALOT more, this is just a sample of some.

ANYWAY, back to the switch, this is what i recommend as for supplies

MOBIL 1 Synthetic Oil 10w30
Oil filter ( brand Doesn't really matter, but i use FRAM )
Jack
Jack Stand
1 Can of Seafoam
Oil Pan
Honda Prelude
Drain Plug / washer

Here is the oil, filter, seafoam and new drain plug and washer ( just because )

The H22A4

Seafoam and 3 cups ( to measure out 1/3, took me a while to figure this one out, FAIL on my part )

Shots anyone?

Drain the FILTHY regular oil

old filter and new filter! ( a PITA to remove without a filter wrench, but can be done )

pce out old oil.

SO all in all, everything went fine ( knock on wood )
BIG difference after a seafoamed, and engine seems to run quieter with the synthetic oil.
I will keep you posted if anything strange comes up. and plan to change it once more in about 1500k to completely flush any crap out.
The cost of this swtich was $58.24 and about 1.5 - 2 hours.

Thanks for checking this out.

So wait, what are the benefits of synthetic? I'm still going to change my oil every 3000 miles regardless of whether you tell me I can wait for 6000 or however many miles. So... do I get like +10 whp?

better for your engine, both in the short and long term, regular oil has all types of crap in it, synthetic has none of that, hence the high price, but hey its your engine, use what you like

Re: My journey to the world of SYNTHETIC OIL.

The change from mineral (or petroleum) based lubricants to synthetic lubricants isn't as much as some people make it out to be. There can be benifits, and domswe's point about mineral oil having other crap in it has merit (there was a Mobil 1 ad that ran here years ago where the racing driver picked up some dirt and told the camera crew that this is wher emost oil comes from, out of the ground and into your engine...Mobil 1's different...) though that could also be determined by brand and quality.

Also, I must disagree, oil filters do make a difference. I change my filter twice as often as I change my oil; it's cheap insurance as far as I'm concerned.

But fantastic write up mate, and lots of good information for the next person who asks.
