Re: Broke a speed wrench, 2 wrenches and 2 breaker bars..

put the wheels on the car (make sure u take the center cap off tho), car on the ground, in gear, with the e-brake (or in park). this will stop the car from moving when ur taking the axle nut off.

make sure ur using an axle nut socket, 1/2" breaker bar, and a pipe as a cheater bar to fit over the breaker bar. will come off no prob

^^that and you can also soak the nut with some pb blaster for a good 10 min before you try taking it off. drench the thing.

we did exactly that... but wheals were not on.
im about to return the 2 broken 1/2" breaker bars right now.

How hard will it be to just do the swap without moving the trany? Because i seriously think i cant get it off without braking it.

so than you DIDN'T do exactly that. if the wheels weren't on, than the car wasn't on the the ground.

the weight of the car on the ground and in gear will be enough to prevent it from rolling.

Il try it but the problem was not the axle moving or anything. Just that it is way to tight. hopefully, like u said, it will make a difference on the ground

Re: Broke a speed wrench, 2 wrenches and 2 breaker bars..

this is pretty stupid, but you're cranking the nut counter-clockwise right? i'll admit i snapped some nuts accidentally by tightening them rather than loosening...
but when the wheels are on and car on the ground, try lifting up on the wrench to loosen (applies pressure to your feet) instead of pushing down on the wrench (applies pressure on the wrench)...if that statement makes sense or not, i can't figure a better way to word it...good luck

really? did you really have to say that?
i mean he's trying to learn and do something for himself and breaking tools is apart of the process...
i don't get people sometimes.

when i did my jdm swap, i pulled the trans out with the motor. if you remove the lower ball joint bolt, the long bolt that holds the strut to the control arm, and the outer tie rod nut, you can pry the axles out of the trans and leave them hanging in the car instead of removing them. this was done on my 97 base. hope that helps a bit

Do you or anyone you know own a compressor with an impact? If you do, Oreilly's will lend you the 36mm socket and you'll have it off in no time at all.

Re: Broke a speed wrench, 2 wrenches and 2 breaker bars..

Are you using an impact gun? From your posts I got the impression your using hand tools. I would say switch to an impact gun(air wrench) and blast it off that way. The collars of those nuts are supposed to be notched inward into the the little flat spot on the spline of the axle, so as to prevent it from backing off under normal operation. You probably could actually take it to your local honda dealer, slip one of the oil change guys like 5 bucks to do it for you, or just ask the service manager if they would be willing to just pull your car in, take the wheels of, zip that nut off, then lightly back on for you to break it free for free. Just a thought...

dude trust me, before you go out and spend a ton of money on a compressor and air gun, just pry the axles out of the trans and leave them in the car. so much easier

Re: Broke a speed wrench, 2 wrenches and 2 breaker bars..

I've had this problem before. Put an 8 foot pipe on my breaker bar with the car on the ground, bent the pipe and snapped the breaker bar at the joint. Ended up having to borrow a 1000ft-lb Matco impact and they came right off

Have fun explaining the broken(limetime warranty) tools to your dad, then paying to ship them to snapon to be replaced or fixed.....
... or just find a Snap On truck and have it replaced on the spot lol. If you do torch it make sure you torch ONLY the nut to expand it. Torching the threads inside the nut with it would be silly but people do it all the time. And dont start a fire. If a 3 or 4 foot cheater bar over the breaker bar wont loosen it air might not either. Its worth a shot tho with a good air gun.

Re: Broke a speed wrench, 2 wrenches and 2 breaker bars..

I had a similar situation, actually exactly the same situation. I managed to get one side off with a 3 foot breaker bar and another 5 foot cheater bar on top of that. Steady, even pressure. My buddy kept wanting to jump on the thing which is great except that I had one wheel on the ground and the other side of the car still on a jack stand and the dumbass ended up making the car bounce off the jack stand. I just stood on my cheater bar for a good ten minutes and all of a sudden I felt it give way.

No such luxury for the other side. My solution there was a Sawzall. If you're very very careful and cut at just the right angle with a blade designed for going through metal you can get it off without destroying the axle. I had to make three cuts around the center of the bolt in a triangular formation.

Took me about 2 weeks but I finally got those damn nuts off so I can keep going on my project lol.
