PCV question

Alright, so this has been bugging the hell out of me and I can't seem to find the answer anywhere. Please bear in mind that I am a noob who doesn't know what he's talking about, but shall continue on as though he does. Why are there 2 sources of ventilation for the crankcase?
I understand the necessity for the PCV ( One that goes into the intake plenum, right? ), but why is there an additional ventilation source ( the one that goes back into the intake prior to the throttle body) ? Surely all this serves to do is heat up the intake charge, pump oil into the intake charge and generally do undesirable things? Or is there something I'm missing here?
I only ask because I'm looking into installing an oil catch can and I'm trying to figure out if I infact require 2 ( 1 for each outlet )

Re: PCV question

the system is a loop. the PCV valve is a one-way valve that ONLY allows air/positive crankcase pressure/blow-by FROM the crankcase and into the IM.
so if air is escaping outta the crankcase, it has to enter somewhere, so it breathes fresh air from the intake.

so if the PCV valve is operating properly, the blowby will go into the plenum of the IM, then to the intake runners. but if the PCV is busted, the blowby has to go somewhere else, so it goes OUT the breather tube, to the throttle body, causing other problems. page 11-159 of the FSM shows the PCV system.

altho there's a constant battle on the "correct" way to do a catch can install, a popular way to do it is to weld two -10AN fittings to the back of the VC going straight to the catch can, and venting the catch can.

Re: PCV question

Ahhhh right so the breather tube is essentially an insurance policy? Thanks, this'll certainly help when I come to do the install.
