Everybody's doing it!

Transmission is tanking so it's time for the swap. I opted for H22 vs. H23vtec for obvious reasons: Time, cost, aftermarket support, knowledge... etc. hmotorsonline quoted $1700 for h22 and transmission (keeping it auto for now).

Now I've been reading posts about sweet deals and low costs on install. Here in Longview, Tx. there isn't but one reputable shop locally (501 automotive) and i've been quoted $1500 for the labor and an extra $500 for any rewiring. This seems steep compared to others that have posted costs. This puts total cost to $3700 not including nick nacks and ecu. The car probably isn't worth that much.

Dallas is 2 hours west of where I live. Does anyone know of any good shops in the Dallas area that are more reasonable? Thanks in advance - Drew

Re: Everybody's doing it!

I'd say if you're going to do the engine swap, you might as well swap the tranny as well, especially if it's crappin on ya. As for shops I can't help you there man.

Re: Everybody's doing it!

ya, 200rpm sooner. would be pretty unique to have one. I know someone else wanted to do an h23 vtec swap and there was a huge discussion on it. I agree with djp though. don't keep it an auto. then that'll crap out on you and you'll have to spend more cash to swap that out.

Re: Everybody's doing it!

Thanks for all the imput guys. Just talked to hmotorsonline again, they cant get me a h22 and automatic transmission that came with the motor for $1300 and $175 to ship it. Wouldn't that swap be pretty standard?

Re: Everybody's doing it!

Yeah that all makes sense but I would need a loner car for the time the car would be down.

Do you have to pull the motor to swap transmissions? I found a JDM h23a auto transmission w/ 35-45k miles for $216.50 shipped from a reputable importer.

dude, you would need a loner anyway for whatever transmission you put in. save yourself a bunch of headaches now and get a 5 spd. if you dont, youre just gonna start another thread in a month-year-however long it takes for the auto to crap itself. then in said thread youre gonna say, i shoulda 5 spd swapped it in the first place

Re: Everybody's doing it!

There's a few good shops in Tyler, TX.....which is about hour and twenty mins. west of you. Dunn's Transmission, Mr. Transmission, and Noble's Transmissions are some of the shops located there. Personally, I never been to any of these shops but I have heard good things about them.

BTW MountainDrew: didn't I see your prelude on craigslist???

Re: Everybody's doing it!

you'd really be saving yourself money if you did the swap yourself.

Re: Everybody's doing it!

Yeah you saw it there. I had it up for trade for a couple of days trying to see what I could trade for. I deleted the post after deciding that it would be hard to own another car this cool for the money. All this before diving into the motor trani swap project. This was going to be an expense and I didn't really know if I wanted to shell out all the money due to what the car's worth. For now I'm just going to keep it running with a working used automatic and decide later about the h22 and manual swap, maybe when/if the motor dies.
While owning this Prelude I owned a STI and if you've ever drove/owned one, it's hard for other cars we can afford to measure up... maybe an Evo but never drove one. I had a down pipe, cat back exhaust and a tune: extra $2000 and I had 300 awhp. It was sweet!!
Anyways, I'm going to stick with the prelude because I like driving it.
