fourth gen ball joint questions

I need a little clarification on the subject of ball joints. There's a lot of conflicting info out there.

Anyway, I'm trying to replace all the old ball joints on my project lude. I found these on eBay:
4 FRONT Upper Lower Ball Joint Set HONDA PRELUDE 92-96:eBay Motors (item 390087406345 end time Nov-26-09 06:25:44 PST)

and

2 REAR Upper Ball Joint For HONDA PRELUDE 92-96:eBay Motors (item 390096270891 end time Dec-19-09 06:42:04 PST)

Are these, particularly, the upper fronts, actually usable? I can't seem to find upper rears anywhere, either. I'm not particularly interested in adjustability. Just looking to do this as inexpensively as possible.

Also, if anyone has a tutorial on how to do this (while saving the arms), I could really use it.

Thanks in advance. The project continues.

Re: fourth gen ball joint questions

okay first off... most of the time they don't sell just the ball joint for the upppers. if you look at your ebay links... and go to where it says placement on vehicle it says front, left, right. so IMO i dont trust it. usually the uppers come w/ the whole upper control arm. cheapest way is form a junk yard.

These ebay listings are correct to me... I've changed front uppers a couple of times and i've bought them without the control arm.

What's the process require? Is it the same for upper and lower? Any idea what to do about rear uppers?

Thanks for whatever info you have. A lot of conflicting information out there, I can't really get a straightforward answer.

Re: fourth gen ball joint questions

To change front upper:
Remove the upper control arm(2 bolts under the hood) and the ball joint bolt(joint remover tool is the must here).
Then push the joint out of the arm and push back in the new one. I'm doing this with a bearing remover tool.
Cant' say anything about the lower as i never changed it.
I'd change the balljoints only when it's nesesarry. Sometimes the factory installed oem joint will last much longer than the "unknown" new one. But that's if you ask me.

FRONT: lower is bigger than upper.
Rear upper and front upper seem to be the same(not sure about it, never changed them)

$64 for 4? they look like ingalls knockoffs and those go for $78 per. 20k mile warranty too, bet they mutilate themselves before that mark. i'm not too big of an eBay fan when it comes to car parts...

Re: fourth gen ball joint questions

Yeah, I hear you elude, but I have to change all of the joints and at $78 per, things will get too expensive fast. I really don't have that kind of money right now and don't really need the adjustability of an Ingalls or SPC kit.

Rock Auto has some that appear to be OEMish fitments and are a little more expensive than the ebay ones, but they only seem to have fronts, nothing for the rear. Those ebay ones are the closest I've found to a complete kit, but still can't find a rear upper.

Of course, if you know of anything, let me know. I would rather avoid the ebay ones if I could, but like I said, cost is a factor and availability seems to be a problem.

Other than that, the process is the usual, correct? Use a joint press to push them out and use a press/silicone lube to push the new ones in?

Re: fourth gen ball joint questions

hmmm...i heard upper ball joints aren't replaceable unless you replace the upper control arm they're mated to. on ingalls they have a nut and washer to secure the ball joints down, but i don't know about pressing in a different ball joint...
