My 5th Gen is puffing smoke after idle. Rings, or valve seals?

I picked up a tired 98 Prelude with a broken timing belt and bent valves on #4 cylinder. I rolled the dice on a "running" junkyard motor and got a smoker. This engine smokes alot mostly after idling. I had great hopes for this junkyard motor, it is very very clean under the valve cover, which I had off when I changed the timing belt, belt idler, and water pump.( to start with new belt and water pump timeline)

The plan is to pull the motor again.. and fix the valve seals or piston rings hopefully not both. I am trying to make this a good every day driver.

Is the dreaded after idle Puff ..Rings or Valve seals? and how do I find out which?

And this is DIY because why?????????????

Try placing it in the Gen specific forum.. or better yet, admit your guilt to a Mod and KINDLY request they move it for you.

moved.

a leakdown test will tell you EXACTLY whats leaking:
-if u hear air leaking out the intake/TB, intake valves.
-if u hear air leaking out the exhaust, exhaust valves
-if u hear it leaking out the oil cap, rings
-and if u see bubbles coming outta your radiator, blown headgasket.
