Sparco Steering wheel glassing

Heres the deal. I have this Sparco steering wheel and its old now so its kinda getting in rough shape. The whole cover has come of and soe chunks of the rubber are starting to fall off. Besides buying a new one, is there any way I can freshen it up by putting some fiberglass on it or something? One of my buddys said the fiberglass wont stick to it and I want to reuse it because, well, who wants to spend another $300 when you can DIY!

any tips or ideas would be helpful and I'll be glad to do a writeup

It wont bond to rubber and even if it does you will be grabbing the **** out of it. At one point in time the rubber will go down tooo much and crack the fiberglass. Its not sooo much it wont bond. It will kindaish....

Re: Sparco Steering wheel glassing

If you wanted to fibreglass around teh metal rim (remove all rubber material from it first) that would probably work. However you would lose all approvals and the like that the wheel came with.

I'd just buy a new one - your steering wheel is the only thing connecting the driver to the car.

Re: Sparco Steering wheel glassing

i think you could actually make a fiber/carbon wrap work pretty well. the coating on top would provide grip i would think and it would look sweet. yes, it would be very different than any sparco wheel, and how your sparco originally was, but if its significantly cheaper than i say go for it and give it a try and let us know how it turns out
