How to get better MPG.

Ok, so I really want to increase my miles per gallon. I'm wondering if cat back exhaust systems help at all? My friend told me that it doesn't give better mpg and it can even decrease it as well. Is this true? Also what other aftermarket parts increase mpg?

Re: How to get better MPG.

about the only "aftermarket" part you can expect to increase mpg is a k&n air filter. an exhaust could. but you're not gonna notice. same thing with an intake. a header will probably do the best out of the main 3. but more then that, what your looking for are things that are gonna make it easier for your engine to do its job. quality spark plugs and wires. doing oil changes on time. consistent and on time tune ups. you could even think about weight reduction. but something to consider, you're spending money to better your fuel economy. which sometimes, the difference isn't worth the money spent. like say for example, you spend 400 bucks on an exhaust but it nets you 1mpg better... now i don't know what gas prices are now a days, as i haven't had to fill up my gas tank in the past 3 months. but lets just say gas is about $2.50 a gallon. now lets say it takes you 2 days to go 15 miles. so every 2 days you're saving $2.50. 400/2.5 is 160... multiply that by 2.. and you got 320 days to make up for that 400 bucks you spent on your exhaust. damn near a year to make it back up.... is it worth it IMO?? no.. now a k&n is what, 30 bucks??? and that will net you about 2mpg... you can make back your money a lot quicker with that.

speaking from experience, the easiest and cheapest way to increase fuel economy (besides weight reduction) drive the speed limit and don't race to the speed limit. changing my driving habits improved my mpg about 3-5mpg depending on my mood. and you know what, i didn't spend a dime to learn how to drive calmer.

Re: How to get better MPG.

^^ perfectly said ^^^

Stay out of vtec and also try to find that point of shifting so you are not getting to high into you rpms but your not staying too low so that the engine is burning more fuel b/c it is too difficult to spin the tires at high gears and low speeds. I don't even know if that makes sense but basically, shift around 2k and 2.5k rpm generally because the motor will rotate the wheels very efficiently at those points.

Re: How to get better MPG.

I believe the H22 is most efficient at 3k rpms, meaning highway cruising.

How much can a tune help? One where you can adjust the air to fuel ratio?

Also, lighten up your drive and power train, light pulleys, light cam gears. Fly wheel, drive shaft?

Re: How to get better MPG.

a tune will help out a bit. lightening up your drivetrain and engine will help. but like i was saying, think of how much money you spend to do all that. and how much mpg you'll really gain. and how long it will take to make that money back.

Obviously, though that's not the only advantage, more power and responsiveness. If you're looking to get these two then you might as well get the mods that get you better mpg first and start saving money sooner.

well, yeah, of course. but if his whole goal is to improve fuel economy its a waste of time and money. but yes, if he's looking for performance improvements as well... then its worth it.

Re: How to get better MPG.

Yes, yes, yes. Keep the baby below 3k rpm and you will some difference.

Don't know if it is a myth or not, but on occasion I throw in some fuel injector cleaner and octane booster to give the car a little treat.

Spark plugs and wires cost under 100 bucks, increase fuel economy, and they look good... well at least the wires do.

Re: How to get better MPG.

I actually get the best mileage when I am doing about 75-80. It's all about the gear ratios. At continuous high speeds the car builds enough momentum so that it is not burning very much fuel to keep it going.

Log in here pretty much every day for the 12 months, and I guarantee that you won't have enough fingers and toes in your entire extended family to count the number of fuel related threads that will be started on here. Every week someone else asks "whats the best way to increase my MPG?" or "do I really have to use premium gas? I'm a poor school kid and can't afford it"
