Lights randomly SHUT OFF! My car wants to kill me!!

Ok, so the recent issue with my car is the headlights turning off whenever they feel like it (Sometimes when I am going around a corner).

Details:
It only seems to happen when I have my High beams on, they are usually on for a little while before they shut off.

Everything else in the car runs just fine when the lights shut off, the couple times it has happened I panic and hit the switch hoping to turn them back on. They come back on after a couple seconds.

I am using the Silver Star headlights, if that matters at all.

I don't think it's the alternator because nothing dims before they go off. I am thinking that it's either connections in the multifunction switch, or something with the headlight circuit. The Headlight relay felt very hot to the touch. It has also been quite rainy lately, but it was not wet when it happened yesterday.

I NEED HELP!

Re: Lights randomly SHUT OFF! My car wants to kill me!!

Nothing ever is truly random... there is always a symptom or a reason, which removes the randomness....

You are on the right path tho'...

As for the relay, it is ok to get a little warm, it is passing a LOT of current-but Hot enough to melt? Not ok.... replace the relay and keep searching for WHY it is getting so hot.... there is always a reason.

Fuses? - doubt it.... not if they come back on after a while-- IE: the relay has a chance to cool down a bit?

AfterMarket Headlights? - Please provide a link to a web site with the specs. It is possible you are drawing to much amperage through the relay. You MAY need to upgrade the wiring (and Relay?)

Wiring? - is it too small to handle the load (see above) are there any shorts in the wiring? And I am not just talking a visual inspection-- Unplug the harness from the relay/power side AND from the Headlight housing itself.... test to ground on both ends. Anything?
Now test the resistance from one end to the other... what is your DMM reading (in Ohms?)

answer these questions and if the problem is not resolved, come back and let us know in detail what you did... or take it to a certified Honda Mechanic that is familiar with our cars electrical system.

Well, I've had these bulbs for at least 5 months now and it just started doing this 2 days ago. This is all I could really find on the bulbs I have .http://www.sylvania.com/ConsumerProd...r/ProductLine/

I'll try testing it it as soon as I can

Then like 10 mins later both of them turned off on me and came back on like 2 mins later...idk why it did that and i was trying to figure out but since that day i havent had
a problem anymore...so i never really checked...

Just thought i share my experience...lol

Re: Lights randomly SHUT OFF! My car wants to kill me!!

I am assumig they are of the 9000 series? (you didnt specify which one.)

SilverStar Headlight
High Performance Halogen Headlight - Single filament for high beam -
1700 +/- 15% 65W ~4000K

These are 65W bulbs...

The Honda Standards are 55W for the low beam and 65W for the hi beams. (pg 23-184 in the PDF)
You wouldnt think ten watts could cause a problem, but don't discount it. Have you replaced the relay yet? Has it ever been replaced?

I am leaning more n more toward this as a solution right now... until you can provide more info.

Yeah, they are the 9000's

No, I still need to get a new relay.
Hopefully I can pick one up very soon, should I go a brand like bosch?

Have you checked to see if you have any ground. The ground strap could have some corrosion over time causing intermediate failure.

Re: Lights randomly SHUT OFF! My car wants to kill me!!

exact symptoms of bad relay, cold soldering joint, corroded connector, or burnt terminal. I'd check the relay first since you said it only happens with the high beams...that pulls double the power which means more heat. It doesnt seem very likely that it is the bulbs since they both have the same problem at the same time. The problem is somewhere in the circuit before the HL circuit splits off to the bulbs.
