Do You Have The Prelude Curse?

I saw this over on prelude power, it was quite interesting to read so I figured id throw up a thread on it over here to get some responses.

in case you dont know what the prelude curse is read about it here

http://www.urbandictionary.com/defin...relude%20Curse

Between the 2 definitions I havent really had the first one too bad but the second one,the mechanical problems......they have been fisting my wallet since i got the car just over a year ago.

here are my encounters with the prelude curse.

I bought my 01 lude in august of last year

when I bought it the only problems it had was the paint was oxodized in a few places and the trunk was bad but i didnt care as I was gonna get a trunk with out a spoiler anyway. and the weather stripping on the doors needed to be replaced.

since buying it ive had the following problems

drivers side floor mat is all kinds of messed up and like bent.

3 months after buying it reverse went out. so did the drivers side lock actuator
I paid 200 to have it all fixed at a dealer thanks to a warranty.
dealer said my clutch was worn to the rivets so I throw in a centerforce II which i was charged another 300 to install.

I get the car back like 2 weeks later and right away im having problems shifting. sometimes car will come out of gear but not into the next gear just grinds.

3 times i go back there and tell them to fix it. their response all 3 times was we cant do anything because we cant replicate it.

in january on my way home from work i notice my clock light dims and half of it goes out then my stereo turns its self off. 20 seconds later it comes back on and everything is back to normal.

the next day on my way home from work my car dies at the front of a light in the only lane. i was 6 blocks from my house. A jump start from my aunt who happened to be on her way to my house got the car going again.

pulling into my driveway the splash guard on the front right wheel well gets ripped off my car and a huge chunk of its missing. i put it back up and put some tape around the missing chunk to help prevent water from getting into my intake.

that night i take my battery to autozone to have it tested and charged they said it was fine.

on my way to work the next day I go by autozone again and have my alternator tested. it was a TINY bit below spec. I say the f word a few times after that and continue to work

on the freeway i notice my clock dim, the stereo turns its self off a few seconds later the abs light kicks on and the gauges all die.

I not wanting to be stuck on the freeway notice im right by my dads school so i floor it and try to get there before the car dies.

flooring it causes abs and the gauges to come back briefly

I make it to the parking lot of my dads work. I tell him my alternator is dead and asked to borrow his car to go buy a new one.

no auto parts store with in any reasonable driving distance has one.

I go by the shop that did some horrible horrible botched work on my accord to see if they could source one. they can and against my better wishes i jump start my car and limp it there to be fixed.

car runs good for about 3 months then my steering wheel starts shaking when I brake. the front brake rotors and pads were replaced a month before i bought the car.

i put on ebc slotted dimpled rotors on the front and plain ebc rotors on the back and hawk hps pads all around .

2 days later i hear a metal grind noise from the brakes.
the metal plate on the back of the front brakes has shifted in place because the glue holding it on melted and was digging into the rotor hub. they were worn in correctly and no heavy braking was done before that happened.

i remove them and return them for a new set. they do the same thing so i remove the plates on all front pads.

brakes make an "aeroplane" noise when ever the car is moving and ive not been able to figure out why.

in the middle of july my ac decides to blow air cool enough to keep me from sweating balls in the 120 degree heat but not enough to make the car nice and cold.

passenger door lock actuator starts buzzing and needs to be replaced which i still havent done.

in august to help my transmission i put in ams snycro mesh. it changes nothing. i do an oil change too

around this time ive noiced i lost a quart of in about 20 days with out hitting vtec once, and my mpg is slowly dropping.

in the beginning of the month I was having fun on an empty road leaving a friends house at 2am I do a shift at 8000 rpm and the transmission decides not to go into gear and cause the rpm to spike by 1000-1500 even tho my foot wasent on the gas.

it didnt seem to do anything then 15 seconds later the dash lights flicker on the engine dies and car comes to a rolling stop. It will not start back up.

my fuel light just came on before getting to my friends house, which is only a few miles from my house. being hopeful i call him and say i need a ride cuz i ran out of gas.

we get 2 gallons of gas put it in still no start at first but a few trys later it starts up.

i get 50 yards and it starts running like total crap and the CEL comes on.
i pull over and have the car towed back home.

around this time im just about ****ting my self because i know my valves are damaged and i have NO money at all.

the first error code that came up was for random misfires.

2 days later its towed to my mechanic after he stops by and confirms its the valves. (not the accord people hes got a 5th gen prelude too)

while the car was there since my dad was paying for repairs and id pay him back we all decided to address the oil burning issue which was bad piston rings.

to fix the head (brian crower valves springs and retainers.) and get new (type s) pistons rings and belts the cost came to about 2000 dollars parts and labor.

on thursday i was replacing the gaskets that go on the valve cover around the spark plug holes and accidentally put the side of my leg against the radiator neck which was already a nice shade of brown and it breaks off.

friday i put in a new radiator and after starting the car to make sure nothings leaking i rev the engine a little and hear my timing belt slapping my timing cover. my auto tensioner is going bad. when the car was apart at the beginning of the month me and my mechanic inspected it and the thing looked brand new. im waiting on the parts to put on a manual tensioner.

my cd player also has some minor issues reading cds...even brand new fresh out the burner cds.

Re: Do You Have The Prelude Curse?

All I have to say is wow man... that is some bad luck. Sorry to hear about your misfortunes. I have minimal problems with my 'lude.

The only major problem I have is the morons who think it's a good idea to cut me off. Can't blame that on the prelude.

Re: Do You Have The Prelude Curse?

ehh I had the second definition for like a week, then it went away. (got sideswiped on drivers side then 5 days later I sideswiped a wall on the other) I've always had incredibly good luck though with everything so I'm not worried. watch now I said that I'll get sh!t on for the next month

Re: Do You Have The Prelude Curse?

I look at it this way....

Even with all the repairs/cost to keep it running.... it is still better than an outrageous new car payment.

And the LUDE is a MUCH better car to drive!

Re: Do You Have The Prelude Curse?

Since I bought my lude I have had to do the following.

1. Replace the brake booster. the old one had rusted through.
2. Replaced the VSS. Got tired of guessing my speed.
3. Resoldered my HVAC controls.
4. Resoldered my main relay.
5. Replaced my LH rear upper control arm.
6. Replaced the alternator.
7. Replaced one tire.
8. Looked car over and found massive rust break through in hidden areas.
9. Replaced most of the vacuum lines underhood.
10. Replaced CAI and filter.
11. Wished that I would win the lottery, even though I don't even play it.

So I guess I've gotten off lite.

Re: Do You Have The Prelude Curse?

the curse comes and goes for me....well the 2nd definition anyways. The first was actually the opposite...I think it helped me get the girl.

I just try to think of the curse as required maintenance that every car needs. UntothheCruel....sounds like you just got a lemon. Plain and simple.

i've only had my lude for 5 months now and the only thing needed doing was to resolder my main relay and more brake fluid for the clutch

Re: Do You Have The Prelude Curse?

it seems most people get the 2nd one. i dunno if the first one is real but number 2 is.

ive also noticed just about everyone who gets hit by it lives in the USA

The curse is also hit and miss. My mechanics 98 lude has been rather problem free. he got it 2 years back for like 3 grand but it needed a motor and transmission which he replaced.

he drives worse than me! hes cracked at least one set of drilled brembo rotors.

other than that the curse hasent gotten him yet....

it has gotten my friend Viktor as well as my friend Joe who sold his and got an EVO 8

Ive also thought many times my car was just a lemon, but before i got it nothing outside of basic maintenance was done to it.

I do hoon it every now and then I gotta have some fun with it =D

but otherwise its been babied...

I think its a curse. but hey it could be worse I havent been in accidents yet

*knock on wood*

Re: Do You Have The Prelude Curse?

My Prelude's at 188,000 miles now, no issues whatsoever and still going strong. Actually I think I've got prelude luck.

Re: Do You Have The Prelude Curse?

first of please warn me about reading books. i keep scroling down hoping this horror will end.

BUT WAIT THERE"S MORE!

anyhow. i don't believe in curses. i think that if you are going to get a prelude, you should do the research on them for maintenance. PReludes are very sensitive cars, you hurt them (8K RPMS STOCK??? What!@!!) and they will hurt you back.

also if you got the car that wasn't routinely maintained, you are bound to have major issues!!! You definately need to know something about fixing cars when owning a prelude.

the take some brains to diagnose them. my 2cents.

Re: Do You Have The Prelude Curse?

I have the curse, but not just the prelude; the whole damn honda curse! I have had 2 accords(90/92 CB7/CB9), 2 preludes(87/01{current}), and a civic ex(95). The first accord was totalled 5 months after I got the car. the first prelude had a bad gas tank in the first week, and then I rearended an audi 80, and the headlight constantly drained the battery. The 2nd accord, the tranny went out 5 months after I got the car, and then 6 months later the engine threw a rod. nearly 2 years later I am rearended by a new civic. I get my prelude, and right off, my gas mileage drops(no more than 300 miles/gallon ever). the clutch goes out 5 months after I get it. Then fix the front pass. driveshaft. After I get it back, the front wheel bearings are bad, get those changed and they find the front passenger hub assembly is bent. Get that back, car goes for about 6 months, and the car gets stuck in gear(5spd). get it towed to marysville. New clutch, flywheel, synchros, vc gaskets, etc. Come to find out, the mechanic that replaced the clutch the first time, left a black 2 in phillips head screwdriver in the tranny. Just about to get it back here soon, just hhave to replace the shifter mechanism. In total, U have replaced about 5 IACVs in 2 cars(92/01). I had a 95 civic. month after got it, overheats. replace entire cooling system. 3 months later(overheats again), does it again 3 months later, and another 3 months after that. When I sell it, the tranny is going. Punk 17 year old buys it for 1100(thank god), oh yeah, I paid $3500 for it.

Have a GF though. getting engaged soon.
