FUKN CRANKSHAFT BOLT!!!!

pls excuse the language..well i've been surfing around and finally decided join. well im from hawaii...anywaies...my main problem..i've done numerous honda timing belt, and all i do is work with honda...my 98 prelude was easy to come off. friends civic with b series was easy, my bros integra and accord was easy..but my accord with a JDM H22A isn't...i tried all kinds of method..i tried heating the bolt and using impact gun with a 33 gal compressor with 150 psi..broke 2 impact socket using a 3 ft breaker bar and a 1.5ft cheater bar. and it still won't budge...im thinking of using a honda crank pulley tool and somehow make or weld an extra extension to it so it can brace onto the floor and use another breaker bar...arghh...any tips and tricks?

Re: FUKN CRANKSHAFT BOLT!!!!

A pilot hole is what you drill into the center of the bolt. Get a drill bit thats smaller than the part of the bolt thats threaded, 1/8 should be sufficient.Once you drill it enough you should be able to pull the bolt right out. If the 1/8 isnt big enough, keep moving up drill bit sizes until you've taken out enough of the center of the bolt to take it out. make sure you stay straight on. If you pop out the side you'll drill the crank...no bueno..

Re: FUKN CRANKSHAFT BOLT!!!!

That's what he's telling you. If you drill enough metal out of the center of the bolt it will let the pressure collapse inward, making the bolt either come out nicely or break apart and come out in pieces, either way it will be out. The only problem with that is that you'd need to find another crank bolt, and unless you have exactly the right one then you're screwed. The thread and size are hard to both find on the same bolt, and if it's wrong then like I said you're screwed. Wrong size thread will mess up the thread inside the crank and either not go in right, or you risk having it let go eventually.

Seriously...this S*** is getting annoying!! I understand yer a big dawg on this forum.. and from what I've read you know yer stuff, but what the hell is the deal with being called a "newb" everytime somebody gives a different method/advice. He said he snapped two sockets..what makes you think this special tool is gonna solve the problem any better. I dont mean to single you out. I've seen it a lot on this forum from a bunch of different people. I'm not a F***ing newb!! I and I'm sure others would appreciate a certain level of respect when searching for advice.

could it be the fact that you gave completely WRONG and useless information to the OP which woulda caused even more headaches for him? maybe?

and i KNOW for a fact that the tool will help. i wasted a WEEK trying to get my crank pulley bolt out. a WEEK! and i broke even more tools than the OP. i bought the tool for $30, and it came out in 5 minutes, no more.

now, lets go to class;
"kids, would you rather buy the cheap tool and have the job done much easier and simpler?
or prefer to center punch, drill a pilot hole, then drill increasingly bigger holes in the bolt? where, oh yea i forgot to mention, if you mess up the threads in the crank or drill too big, you basically need a new crank???"

Re: FUKN CRANKSHAFT BOLT!!!!

Whatever man... you completly missed the point of the post. I'm not saying I'm right...nor am I saying yer right....There needs to be respect!!! This forum is for a group of people to share "advice"(opinions) in a common interest. I find it hard to take advice from people who think their way is the end all be all, especially when they dont even know you, or your capabilities. And I wasnt even the one to suggest drilling it... I merely answered the question.

Re: FUKN CRANKSHAFT BOLT!!!!

go to home depot, buy a 6' long steel pipe, 1" in diameter that fits over the 1/2" breaker bar. i promise you this will become your BEST friend very shortly.

Re: FUKN CRANKSHAFT BOLT!!!!

Here was my experience, for anyone who cares to read:

I read everything I could about removing this bolt and even watched a couple of youtube videos on it. I used Kobalt tools, 1/2" breaker bar and 1/2" extension (20" in length to get just outside wheel well) and 17mm impact socket. I had a 1/2" ratchet with a small section of black pipe attached to the special hexagonal tool that fits inside the crank pulley in order to immobilize the crank pulley while making this attempt. I had the breaker bar/extension/socket supported by a jackstand. I used a 3' length of black pipe on the breaker bar for a cheater bar.

I broke the 20" extension on this first attempt, scary, since the broken piece flew off in a random direction.

OK...what next. I bought an Ingersoll Rand $300 impact hammer from S**rs (780 ft/lbs of torque), cranked my air pressure up to 140 psi on a strong 60 gal compressor, heated the bolt for about 4 mins with a propane torch (trying to melt lock tite if there was any), then got after the bolt with the impact. She just smiled...so I kept wailing away with the impact. More smiles.

What next...Took impact back to S**rs (my only Christmas present, btw) and manager was cool enough to take the return since it didn't get job done.

At this point I have limited options. I can't get bolt off with crazy impact hammer or regular half inch tools. Guy at auto parts store suggests I try a machine works place for stronger tools. 'kay...

I go there, and the 3/4" breaker bar and 3/4" extension (16" long) with a 3/4" to 1/2" impact adapter are about 200 bucks. I'm thinking, "please, I can't break these." Dude says, "You will break your car before you break these tools." Then he loans them out to me. Way cool.

I get home, use the same set up as I tried originally. I had all 220lbs of myself in the air and...nothing. Bolt did not budge. I give up. Called it a day. I was getting ready to take tools back when I thought, "well, maybe I should try a little heat just once more before I give up here." Even though I had been told repeatedly that heat would need to be way hotter than propane, it was all I had. So I heated the bolt for about 4 mins and then quickly tried the breaker bar/extension/jackstand combo one last time. With all of me in the air and even pulling up under the nearby work bench for something extra, I hear a loud "crack". Then I instantly hit the floor. I thought my kneecap had shattered. Thankfully, no. Bruised but not broken. And the bolt was loose.

So, for all you out there, this was all done (and more) over 4 days of aggravation. Be ready for possible (or probable) aggravation in the extreme. Be ready to potentially break tools.

If you want to be sure before you start, I recommend:

1. Have the special crank pulley holder they make for Hondas (it is referenced multiple times in the post).
2. Have heat available, propane or MAPP gas if you are not familiar with acetylene torches. (disclaimer: acetylene can cut your bolt in pieces and destroy your engine, so if you don't know what you are doing, fougedaboudit).
3. Have a VERY strong breaker bar, extension and impact socket. I would recommend 3/4 stuff from somewhere other than a B&M, but then, you can go progressively through the tools like me and take a lot of time to do this, potentially. Remember, if you wind up not needing an expensive tool, you can return it unused.

Just my two cents.
