winter car

Hi guys,
I don't want to drive my lude in Wisconsin's harsh winters. So i am going to go look at this 92 ford explorer. Any tips on what I should look for so I don't get screwed over? (People like to do that with me and cars cuz I'm blonde and pretty lol)

Re: winter car

condition of ball joints, bearings, tie rods

rough shifting, heavy rust, odd sounds

be sure to test the 4x4

Re: winter car

thanks for the advice! It was in bad shape these two ghetto chicks that didnt know a thing about cars. there was no spare the tires were so bald needed brakes they never changed the tires the whole three years they owned it the transmission fluid was gritty and toasty there was almost no oil and it was black and i told them they need to fix that and they said they dont care about stuff like that. I looked at the gas spout thing and it was rusty as hell then i looked under the car and the tie rod you could see were it originally was and how much the rust had eaten it away. And when i test drove it just for ****s and giggles she smoked a swisher sweet. and if there was 4x4 the button didnt work but like she said "you dont even really need that in a truck any way" lol why are some girls so stupid when it comes to cars?

Re: winter car

best thing to do sometimes is get in good w/ local mechanic and when u find a car take to them to check out, works for me because sometimes i overlook things if i really want the car so its always a good thing to get another pair or eyes

Re: winter car

look for a truck somewhere in the south, you may have to drive a ways to pick it up but it would be worth it, you dont need ac in the winter and most suvs around here if the ac doesn't work the price is usually a lot cheaper because it gets soo hot around here in the summer time, and the up side of the trucks below north carolina is that most of them have probally never seen the snow before so you don't have to worry as much about getting one that is all rusted out...

for example: i stopped and looked at a 95 F150 down the road from me the other week the guy only wanted 3000 for it, it was a short bed extended cab, 4x4, 302, AT with 152,xxx miles, the body looked pretty good had some scratches and small dings but nothing major, (mainly stuff from being used as a hunting truck) 3" suspension lift with 33" BFG all terrains, he bought the truck new and had all the reciepts and records for oil changes (every 3-4k miles) and maintenece.... he lended up selling it for 2000 because the ac didn't work....

Re: winter car

the jeep 4.0 engines commonly go around 170k, i know first hand, and was told by a jeep guy. didnt think it would happen to mine, but it did. thankfully they are cheap to replace because they are a dime a dozen. other than that they are unbeatable. good power, comfortable, will go anywhere.

If I were you I would get a truck. Trucks are handy all year around. If you move or buy a new couch or something like that you will have your truck.

Re: winter car

although i do not like american cars, the ford explorer is pretty nice as a winter daily. parts are easy to find.... and also i believe that they are on the top 10 list on dependable cars for under 5000. and a 92 explorer would def be under that

You sure on that? I just quickly went through the first 3 pages of the general talk section and they date back to september 2010. The last post that was above you was last year, unless its in another section of general talk I didn't bother looking
