Prelude ECU info...

Hey guys,

I've been searching and searching trying to figure out what models the ECU we have in the Preludes are... Is there a site, thread or someone that can post the ECU info...

My reason for the thread is because I want to tune my ECU, but want to make sure that I have the proper ECU. There are too many misleading posts and threads.

Note:
I was a tuner, but for Mitsu/Subaru/etc... never for Honda but I know the process is more dirty for Honda since you have to mod the ECU with a Demon or buy eeprom chips and get the burned manually.... I have the equipment for burning eeprom chips and more... I posted this info so I don't get a million post about why not just get someone to do it for you...

okay the ecus that i know for preludes:
h22 obd1 p13
h23 obd1 p14
h22 obd2 p5m

and honda is not a hard ecu to chip. usually the ecu used is a p28 single overhead vtec ecu. has the easiest and most simple parameters. you can replace the rom w/ another without problems. look at my post in the NATURALLY ASPIRATED... N/A performance library. that will give you some ideas.

Re: Prelude ECU info...

For tuning with the ppl usually use the P28 gsr ecu or the P72 which are OBDI ecu's

Re: Prelude ECU info...

Just went to check my ecu and found it to be a p14... but I have a h22a engine!! The guy that sold me the car told me the ecu was swapped too... not very happy right now.... i wanted to get a p13 to have a tuned basemap.... I might go with a p28 now then...

next to nothing.

a p13 is not tunable via eeprom, real time tuning.

The p13 can't be tuned? can I assume you would recommend a p28 or p72 over the p13 for just basic tuning?.... I have a lovely h22a going to waste at the moment now on my engine bay running on a p14 w/o vtec... so the cheapest I could find that I can still tweak was the p13, but if its not tunable which one should I select?

Re: Prelude ECU info...

you can use piggy backs like the vafc and such but none of the programs like neptune, ectune, hondata, crome...etc are functional with a p13.

Re: Prelude ECU info...

I don't like piggybacks and want the car to look as if its stock. Like if Honda should have made it that way from the beginning. Which one is the best for those getting ready to do a swapping or have swapped an h22a already and would like to get it tuned?

A. P28

B. P30

C. P72

In my case a newb not so newb into tuning that would like to start small?

Re: Prelude ECU info...

go to hondata.com they have chipped p28 that u can buy with the basemap you need to plug in an be able to drive it safely and then allow u to get it tuned, but u will need the hondata program or get a chipped p72 so u can control you secondaries

Re: Prelude ECU info...

I want to retain the knock sensor w/ the ecu which from what I understand is lost when switching to p28...
I'm going to a junkyard to get a TPS since mine is bad and hopefully find an ECU...

**Which cars have:

*P28
*P30
*P72

I know tuning wise is better w/o knock sensor changing and messing around with the ignition timing/others, but I would still like to have it for the small percentage of safety it provides.

Re: Prelude ECU info...

dude you dont need that junk. The window for ignition timing error is HUGE for our motors. Especially if you are starting out with a real h22 basemap (the stock ignition timing is stupid conservative). p72's are expensive and rare. p28's or vtec converted p06's are fairly cheap and abundant.

i'd go with a p28. You will need to pull the vacuum line from the IAB diaphram so they will stay open or you can just remove the secondary butterfly plate altogether with shorter bolts (you have to remove the studs too). The h22 really likes that free modification.

call or contact my buddy john at www.phearable.net. He'll get you setup.

If you are interested in running neptune or eCtune, shoot me a pm.

I had seen that somewhere about removing the butterflies. I might just lock it open if that is okay. About the ECU... I've been looking around I think it will be easier for me to find a p28 in the junkyard than the others... I was also at your friends website looking at his kits... Very cool stuff! I love the fact that we have to get dirty and do some assembly work!

I noticed that who ever installed the engine did some wiring modifications... there is a 4P connector in the engine bay going into the passenger side firewall into the ECU... two or tree are wired to the ECU and one is left unplugged since it is wired directly to the VTEC Solenoid. I'm wondering if I will have to do some wiring changes to make the p28 work on the car properly. If so can anyone post the schematic diagram?.

98vtec thanx!!!!! I need to know in what cars I can find the p28 in and if the ECU is on the passenger's side firewall floor like in the Prelude.... I might find a few more than just one...

Found this on Wiki for p28 ECUs:

1992-1995 Honda Civic Si
1992-1995 Honda Civic EX, EX-V
1992-1995 Honda Civic ESi (European Market)
1993-1995 Honda Del Sol Si (US)
1993-1995 Honda Del Sol ESi (European

Just realized i left my tool box at home and the junkyard closes at 5:00pm.... I live 50min. away from where I work and the place is 35 min. away from my job....

Re: Prelude ECU info...

I will get a basemap first from 98vtec's local bud in Tampa. I can't tune without realtime programming or emulator for a flash on a fly. I'm not starting a biz on this and I have to admit that I am far away from being able to tune these guys, like I did for Mitsubishi and Subarus. They are very very different the ecus and most of the chip selling stuff would never work on that arena. Honda tuning is light years ahead IMHO. OBD2 has integrated flash capabilities where these you have to install a Demon or use an emulator to tune then once done burn it into the chip. It is more $$$ but it is so far more developed than any other platform so it is very cool to see all these sub routines being developed all over the place! It's awesome!

I know enough to know I don't know anything. :)

Edited:
I still haven't learned how the multipliers work on the maps.... do they use the same standard definition parameters to convert the data from bin in all the tuning programs??
What is the processor in all the pX ECUs?? since they all use the same assembly code...
