Valve Adjustment

Ok, I know many of you on here can do this on your lunch break, and I've seen my dad do it a few times when i was a kid, but I've never done it on my own, and I can't find someone around me to teach me so here goes. My valves are making this rattling sound and everyone saying that I need to get them adjusted/tightened. I've never had it done before and I'm @ 103K. There's no Honda stealership here anymore (went out of business) so I found this mechanic who only works on Honda's. He said he'll do it for $60, I know that's pricey, but like I said, I can't do it myself.

Well enough blabbering, let's hear what you'll got to say....

Everybody tells me that, but I've never done it before and I've only seen it done when I was a kid. I'd love to learn if someone would teach me, plus I like working on my own car. Alot better than paying $60.

Re: Valve Adjustment

Well depending on where you're located that could be either both cheap or pricey. I'd still rather someone teach me how to do it.

While I'm at it, he said he could do a Timing belt replacement (everything involved) for $550 to $600, now that I think is cheap. Other places have told me $700 to $800.

Re: Valve Adjustment

You can do it without the tool, I've done it on my 4th f22a with a rachet piece and a screw driver, but dont take my word for it. Also a good idea to clean out some sludge or carbon off the inside, and replace those crusty seals, and be careful tightening the head cover bolts since you'll easily over tighten it and break it off like I did.

Re: Valve Adjustment

^^ What he said. Careful tightening the valve cover bolts. You'll snap them pretty easy, and have to buy a new headstud. Not a big deal, but then you gotta make sure to retorque it to spec (with oil on the threads)

Also 60 dollars for a valve adjustment is cheap, especially since you'd probably need to buy a few tools to do it yourself anyways.

Re: Valve Adjustment

I guess I misunderstood the guy, it was $60 for the valves and to make sure the timing belt was ok. I got it done today and will be getting the timing belt done soon. I take back what I said, that's cheap. And I'm at 103K.

Re: Valve Adjustment

A little. He says is probably cause the timing belt needs changing, but I don't know. I plan on getting it done either this or next week, but I don't see how the timing belt would cause it to make that noise if it just got tightened.

Thanks for you'll comments help so far, I'll keep you'll posted.
