Car is overheating

Hey guys, its benn a while but I got a serious question. After my car heats up and idles for a while the coolant temperature sensor shoots way, way up. I don't think my car is overheating because I can't smell anything. My lower radiator hose has been popping off my radiator alot recently and I have to take my car on a long trip next week. Do you guys think there is a problem or a way for me to find out if there's a problem.

Re: Car is overheating

maybe you failed to mention something and thats why i'm so confused... so let me get this straight... your car warms up and continues to warm up and goes past normal operating temperature. and sometimes the radiator hose comes loose... how many times has this happened and when it happens now, does coolant come out? um, maybe you should get a new hose clamp to fix the failing one first. just because you're car is over heating won't necessarily mean you'll smell something. burning coolant has a distinct smell yes, but USUALLY your cooling system is sealed pretty tightly and very few fumes occur. the only time you'll smell burning coolant is when it leaks onto the engine or exhaust manifold.

Re: Car is overheating

check to make sure there is coolant in it. coolant does not mean just plain old water. it means antifreeze. because antifreeze not only keeps your radiator from freezing its also helps cool the engine in hot temps. i would get a new hose and new clamps more than likely you hose it prolly soft. that happend to mine where it attached the the engine on the passenger side it split cause it was old. also check your thermostat. it might be bad. DO NOT drive by ANY means if your car is hotter than it should be! you will WARP your head or crack it its aluminium. which can NOT withstand high temps like a cast block u find in old trucks and such.

Re: Car is overheating

Sorry I wasn't clear before. What I mean to say is that I let my car warm up, I drive it and its fine. But when I stop at a stop light my temp guage goes up. And the lower radiator doesn't come loose, it pops right off the radiator. I was wondering if there was an easy way to check if my thermostat was working right. Or, perhaps, there are any other reasons for this.

My radiator is brand new, but I am not sure if the fan is on, I should go check that out.

Re: Car is overheating

coming loose, popping off, same difference. regardless, a radiator hose coming loose or coming off, you're gonna loose coolant. have you replaced that lost coolant?

Re: Car is overheating

i didnt even think of that! check the fan if its not working check the relay under your hood. my friend had a saturn sc2 and it kept over heating. he could do the same thing drive around and when he would stop it came on and the temp went up. his relay wasnt making good contact. we cleaned it and it worked fine. so check the fan.

Why dont you replace the thermostat? that's a $15. dollar part. Chances are it's the still the original lol...

To test it, you simply boil the t-stat in water and test if it opens up @195 degrees F. It's explained in the online manual...have you downloaded it? it's in my sig.
