new clutch and flywheel?

I'm looking into buying a new clutch and flywheel preferably stage 1 or 2 clutch with a lightweight flywheel. I'd prefer something around $500 if possible but i'm willing to spend $700. I don't need something with insane holding power just something street drivable that will last long. Any ideas or recommendations?

Re: new clutch and flywheel?

I got an exedy Stage 3 clutch from ebay, very satisfied... I believe it was 300 or so, maybe less. Stage 1 and 2 will be even less than that!

Re: new clutch and flywheel?

IMO!! no need to upgrade from OEM or STAGE 1 the MOST!!!! if your not boosted/ throwing down crazy numbers. Stage 1 can hold up to 300hp i believe.

best combo out there is exedy stage 1 w/ fidanza 8lbs which goes on ebay for around 350 with free shipping.

or go with my future setup, act street disc / pressure plate w/ fidanza 8lbs

just my 2 cents

And I agree with your 2 cents.

I have a stage 1 exedy in my car. Nice and sticky, feels great.

Your best bet is a exedy stage 1 and a fidanza 8lb or 11.5lb flywheel. 8lb is actually cheaper and better for performance, but from what I hear it kills your leg in traffic.

And that would be my 2 cents.

Re: new clutch and flywheel?

Ya the clutch is a lot more stiff and since I do have stage 3 don't you think i'm planning on doing something to it...And stage 1 can't hold 300hp

That is the combo I have and since I've finally got it installed, I can vouch for it. And once you get used to it (took me about 3 days), traffic isn't even a problem. And the Stage 1 clutches from Exedy are good up to about 230hp.

yea i don't remember seeing a stage 1 holding that much power. 230hp sounds about right. i really didn't want to kill my leg in traffic.

how does the new clutch feel compared to the OEM one? and did you notice any gains from the light flywheel?

Re: new clutch and flywheel?

Just so you know fellas, not all stages hold the same power. A stage 1 exedy may hold only 230whp while a stage 1 [insert brand here] holds 300. It all depends on the maker and the type of clutch. Go to search and look for a thread called "Clutch Stages" more info in there.

Def Exedy stage 1 + Fidanza 8lb (or 11.5 lb) flywheel.

i don't know what people are talking about "kill your leg in traffic." i have the exedy stage 1 with fidanza 8lb and definitely think the two work well together. That and being under $500 sells the deal.

Re: new clutch and flywheel?

you dont need more than a stage 1 clutch, but it depends on what your doing to the car especially if its for everyday driving. stage 1with a light weight flywheel id say go 8lbs, at least thats what id do, cuz i have one lol.

i've driven a mazdaspeed protege and its clutch was extremely hard. i thought i pushed the clutch all the way and the car wouldn't start. apparently i could push it in even further. but that's what i mean. a higher stage clutch usually is stiffer and i don't want mine to be that stiff

the exedy organic isn't that stiff, feels a little stiffer than stock and definitely is streetable.

Re: new clutch and flywheel?

The Exedy Stage 1 feels barely, and I just mean BARELY stiffer than stock. It won't "Kill your leg" at all. And if it does...then you're just a pussy.

And as far as performance differences with the lighter flywheel/stiffer clutch...I'm not going to say "OMFGxxorz feels like I added NOZ YO!" I have never had the car on a dyno so I can't give you numbers to compare...It doesn't feel any quicker really, but now I can chirp 3rd so that's gotta say something. lol

So I'm gonna get my engine rebuilt tomorrow. I have a skunk2 exhaust, dc headers, and an aem intake. Would an Exedy clutch stage 1 be recommended for my car?

Yea I'd recommend it if you were gonna put in a aftermarket clutch anyways. I'd probably get a light flywheel while I'm working with the clutch. 2 in one so you don't have to take apart the tranny again if you decide to have a light flywheel later on.
