Icon5 EGR Flow Insufficient..Help please

I drive a 97 Honda Prelude base model. I checked the code when my check engine light came on and the code says that the EGR flow is insufficient. I looked into it and saw that the problem had to do with exhaust flow. I was planning on completely replacing my exhaust. I was wondering if by swapping my exhaust and headers, the problem would be voided. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Joe.

Mine just popped on as well, same code i believe... You're egr flows like 5-10% or something of your exhaust back into your engine. Kind of an emissions thing i think. As far as I know your egr is right to the left of your valve cover and would not be fixed by replacing exhaust and header but someone with a little more knowledge will probably correct me :)

I think I had this problem before and they carved out the EGR valve bigger or something...

Ok, so I should look into replacing the egr valve? Do you think it's a costly fix?

Thanks,
Joe

Re: EGR Flow Insufficient..Help please

okay so here is the location of your egr valve. there are two hoses connected to it. disconnect both and start the car. more than likely it'll either not start or start and run like poop for a second or two and die. if this does not clear the code than you'll more than likely need to replace it. it is an easy fix. just the two hoses that pull off real easy and a few bolts.

is the car currently running like sh*t? have you messed w/ the hoses? they could be crossed...

also if you end up replacing it you can do away w/ that bracket all together and hide the egr for a cleaner look like i did...

hope this helps

btw i'm sure you'll get some better tech info from more ppl. good luck

Re: EGR Flow Insufficient..Help please

cool cool, thanks for the pictures and help. I don't think it's running too bad at the moment, I haven't really had it in the condition i'd like it to be. I have a horrible lifter tick and my clutch recently burnt out at 160k and I haven't driven it after I noticed slipping. Other than that it runs well when drivable. It's an n/a motor. No mods...yet. I'll try to find the EGR from the pic you gave me.

Re: EGR Flow Insufficient..Help please

*stole your pic* thats not the erg valve you have have pointed out. thats the egr solenoid. the egr valve it self is mounted on the intake manifold. on the far passenger side. and has a vacume line gone to the top of it that comes from the solenoid across the top of the fuel rail.

as far as that code goes. just take off your egr valve and clean it with some tb cleaner and a tooth brush.

Re: EGR Flow Insufficient..Help please

I JUST had the same problem and it was super easy to fix. Before you start, go buy a new EGR valve gasket from honda or an aftermarket one... $1-$5

Tkae off your EGR valve, and use carb cleaner and a bristled brush to clean the valve. Its should slide up and down pretty smoothly. Also, it helps to scrape any carbon out from the erg port on the intake manifold as well. I just used a coat hanger and scratched it up and out. Make sure to vaccum any remains out of the manifold. Once your done, reset your ECU (disconnect battery) and start her up again.

Worked great and I seem to be getting much better gas mileage.
If you google search prelude egr valve cleaning, there is a very informative writeup somewhere.

Re: EGR Flow Insufficient..Help please

oh alright...I was looking for the egr from the picture and it didn't look right. Cool, I'll look again. Does anyone have any pictures of the actual valve?
