More Rookie Engine Questions...:P

Hey guys I just bought a 93 Honda Prelude Si!! The guy who owned it before the guy i bought it from did a motor swap and I'm trying to figure some things out...

The model number is F23a and it doesn't say vtec on the valve cover.
Therefore:

a) Is it Dohc? Or how could i tell that it was???
b) Is it vtec? (or how could i tell etc)
c) how much horse power does it have?

Also, when i shift into second gear, it makes a grinding sound, as if i've mis-shifted. Is this a major problem? Can it be fixed?

thanks in advance for your help!!
