NEED HELP.....

So first off I am not sure how many of you can actually help....because this is about my new DD and not the lude...she is fine but I thought I would try since everyone on here seems to be pretty knowledgeable anyway....
So here are the basics, when we bought the car it was running the guy said it has skipped a tooth and he was not sure why..we said fine and picked it up for really cheep. We bought parts, replaced the timing belt, water pump, and the basics. We checked the valves, bought an extra head, and replaced the majority of the gaskets. So far so good right?...wrong so we get everything together on Saturday and try to start it up, nothing but a whining sound and not cranking. We think its the battery so we take mine and put it in...same thing then we think it is the starter...of course they don't make the starter we need in the us...but long story short we tried to jump the car and it should have started even if the starter is bad correct? Well the boys worked some back yard magic on the starter...but when we go to start the car you just hear the sound of the starter and the engine never roars....we are stuck and are running out of options...any ideas?!?!!? It seems like somewhere between the time the starter runs and the engine should start, it is not getting there...if that makes sense?

Re: NEED HELP.....

well i know on some starters, it depends on how its made, the gear pops out and then starts spinning on the flywheel to turn the motor over. maybe yours is supposed to pop out and its not.

Re: NEED HELP.....

But wouldn't the car start if it was jumped or push started?

Re: NEED HELP.....

make sure your getting power to the selnoide, the sepilnode is what pushes the starter tooth to engage the flywheel, when you turn the key to the start posision you have to have 12v avlaivle volatge to the starter selnoide. sounds like to me the sleiode is not engaging, tap the selioide lightly with a brass or rubber hammer to loosen it up a little bit.

Re: NEED HELP.....

Like fezz_tec check the said check then solenoid cuz you should hear a "pop" if you turn the key really slow to start it or the thing that the solenoid pusses to make the gear pop up and grab the flywheel. As far as it not working when ya try and push it well it could just be a lil ruff running and hard to start. Ya know like a car thats been siting for a while and you have to crack it for like 30 seconds b/4 it will start. If i wear you i would take the starter out and look up how to take it apart clean and check all of that first.

Well when we tried push stating it the first time was down hill and the second time was when it was towed behind a friends truck just to make sure....also we did take apart the starter, cleaned it, and checked it. As for the solenoid I will check it this weekend...sounds like it might be the culprit. Also where the hell do I get a JDM starter!?!?!!? Toyota says they don't order them and there is not one that will fit that we have been able to find all week......

Re: NEED HELP.....

I don't know if this will be much help but I find going back to basics the best way to trace a fault as they are usually a very small item causing a lot of pain in the ass. As you will know you need 4 components to make your car run; air/fuel, compression, ignition and exhaust. Check to make sure that fuel is getting into the engine by pulling out the spark plugs. These will be wet if fuel is getting in. The next thing to check is the ignition or spark. It is possible that as you are having trouble with your starter you have a fault in your electrics, quite likely a bad earth. This may also be the case if the spark plugs are dry as your fuel pump may not work. Then you need to check the compression in your engine with a compression tester.
If the butterfly is opening on the air intake then you have air getting into the engine.

If all these are present then your engine should run. If the timing is off it will run roughly unless the timing is completely out.

Good luck hope this helps.
