New Full Exhaust Now CEL

Hey Guys,
I have a 1998 Honda prelude with 2 strange issues.

First off.
I replaced my entire exhaust system
Megan Racing headers...Brand new Mangaflow cat, and a exhaust shop cat back with a megan racing muffler. Looks and sounds great...

Only problem is right before i replaced the exhaust i had a Check engine light...Brought it in and they said it was an emissions code saying that the Cat was bad.

So long story short i replaced everything it was all rusted and such so now even with the high flow cat (it's a real cat no just a test pipe) i'm getting a CEL and ATTS light ( i know they come on at the same time )

If i pull the negitive on the battery and reset the codes i'll be fine for about an hour or so and then the CEL comes back on again.

I also replaced Both of the O2 Sensors in this process.
ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRICIATED!

Re: New Full Exhaust Now CEL

I've had the same issue with the 'cel' in the past, the inner core of your high flow i believe is still different than the oem cat, therefore your lude's comp. is like 'hmm, somethin's a lil different down there', know what i mean? Even with your high flow, a shop will have to register it into the ecu i believe, same as with an oem cat

Re: New Full Exhaust Now CEL

Yes, i know exactly what you mean... I did some research before i bought it and everybody said that I got either an OEM cat or a Magnaflow that it would be ok. Apparently not... I literally replaced the entire exhaust system and i'm still getting this light. Is there anything else i could do besides an O2 sim.

Re: New Full Exhaust Now CEL

What if you moved the second o2 sensor a little further down the exhaust. Does anyone know if that works?

Re: New Full Exhaust Now CEL

okay... you could even get away w/ NO cat.... heres the deal. the two O2 sensors must read DIFFERENT READINGS.... the purpose of the cat is to make the second O2 read that cat is cleaning up the exhaust... in comparison to the first 02.

so... lemme ask you this... your first 02... its located right after the flex pipe right???
well the second 02... needs to be at least 12-16 inches away... and since your running a "HIGH FLOW" cat... the 02 needs to be raised out of the direct path of the exhaust. this way it doest read the same exhaust as the first one. ive done this one 98bb6sh's exhaust and my friends 04 s2000. they havent had a problem w/ their cel. ask 98bb6sh for some detailed pics to explain this better.

Re: New Full Exhaust Now CEL

Yes, that's exactly it. My o2's are pretty close together. So what your saying is that i need to close up the hole on the cat and have a new O2 bung welded on further down the exhaust stream? It makes sense...is there any other way to deal with this besides having to drill out a new hole for the o2?
Thank you very much for the tip. I've been going crazy over this... I just thought that since i bought a legit "magnaflow" cat that i wouldn't be dealing with this problem. Guess not.

not washers... its called an OIL DEFOULER ... just take your 02 sensor to a parts store... and find an oil defouler that you can screw your 02 into. then havethat welded in or screw it in to your existing 02 bung.

Re: New Full Exhaust Now CEL

Great! Thanks so much for all of the information. You guys really cleaned alot of issues up for me. I believe the code was running rich. I threw the paper out that had it on there...only because I thought it was fixed.

It was definitely an emissions code. The guy told me 9 times out of 10 when he saw that code the cat was bad. A few day's later my exhaust and I was dragging it home. (luckily it happened at the liquor store only a block from my house). I didn't even think to use a spark plug defouler...

My only question is how would the o2 still screw in if i put the defouler in there? Thanks so much for all the help guys again. I really appreciate it.

i got a 98 prelude SH and im thinking of going full exhaust headers and all, i kinda figured your car was either running too lean or too rich. Did the ATTS light go away as well as the check engine light?

Ok, I drove around for two days and the light came back on. Although I only used 1 of the 2 Non-Foulers. So tonight I put the 2nd one on as well. Hopefully that will get the light to stay off.

Yes, from what I've read the ATTS light will come on w/ the check engine light on these cars for some reason.

Re: New Full Exhaust Now CEL

Ok guys going to get the CEL checked again today to see if it might be something else triggering it? I installed the 2nd o2 Nonfouler last night and the CEL and ATTS lights both popped back on while driving this morning. I'm dumbfounded by this.

Just an update after installing 2 sparkplug non foulers still experiencing CEL.

Re: New Full Exhaust Now CEL

BUMP

Still no solution for this....

Went to one6 motorsports and picked up a brand new Denso o2 sensor with the correct harness on it so i didn't have to cut this one. I

Inserted the 1st o2 (brand new) in the front pipe pre cat. .

Have the non foulers installed in the rear post cat

The light comes on EXACTLY after 2 drive cycles every time.

The code at first was p0134 so i reset it then I got p0133.

Reset them again, put the BRAND NEW o2 in and 2 drive cycles later... CEL popped on again.

It always comes on while i'm at crusing speed about 30 mph.

Please help guys i'm getting to the point where i'm going to have to take it somewhere and i really dont want to.

okay. i cant tell if your codes are for 02 heater circuits or 02 signal malfunction. let me look into those codes and get an answer.

Re: New Full Exhaust Now CEL

The code was for o2 signal malfunction.

Ok, now here's an update. I replaced both of the POS autozone o2 sensors and got 2 denso's with the factory harness connector. So installed those, cleared the code and waiting to see what happens. The guy at the speed shop seemed pretty confident that this would take care of it but we'll see... I have a feeling it's still going to pop on.

It always comes back on right after the 2nd time i drive the car at cruising speeds....

Light came back on.

P0420 Catalyst inefficiency below threshold

I installed the spark plug non-foulers but the light still came on.

The car feels like theres a lead weight on the front end of it.

Re: New Full Exhaust Now CEL

SOLUTION FOUND!!!!

Ok, well first off let me explain something. When I took my entire exhaust apart I had completely forgotten that the front and rear o2 connectors were EXACTLY the same. Supposedly, when I was putting it back together I connected the front O2 to the rear sensor and vice versa....

Honest mistake though considering the connectors are exactly the same. I could have sworn I replaced them one at a time but hey! the CEL is off now!!

I still kept the non-foulers in there just in case.

Thanks to everyone who has helped me with this!
