Exhaust pop

What makes an exhaust "pop" when the rpm's go down?
My exhaust does it every once in a great while and I kind of like it, but I know it's not supposed to. Also I never knew this site had advertisements on it.

Re: Exhaust pop

backfiring?

its when unburnt fuel in the exhaust (or sometimes the intake manifold) gets ignited from either the valves being slightly open during combustion, the timing being slightly off, or any other causes. this is pretty common when running a straight exhaust with no cat, resonators, or mufflers.

Re: Exhaust pop

Exactly what Neck said. Any engie with an aggressive tune does it, and many without. My stock tune on my H22 does it, though I never noticed it before I put the louder muffler on it.

If you ever watch circuit racing, you'll notice as they brake for a corner at the end of a straight they pump flames out the exhaust?

(That's an Australian spec V8 touring car)

Any engine does it, especially when you're going flat out then suddenly back off. Though the flame action only happens when the heat is extreme, and there's enough air in the system to allow it to ignite. (Since raw fuel obviously can't burn without air, which should've just been burned in the combustion chamber)
