Snapped Bolts Cam cover

hey guys i need some advice, while i was putting in the Cam seal that i bought from E I snapped two of the bolts that hold down the cam cover, Im at school so sorry for the Paint picture. The two black dots circled in blue are the ones i snapped is it even ok to drive the car with out them in? hopefully you can make out the attachment.\

The cams are the non-straight lines and the covers are the straight lines over them. and bolts are in black dots.

I was think maybe one would've been fine but since its two and they are right next to each other im stressing the F out. and Worst off all half of both of the bolts are stuck in there so i have to drill, tap and un screw them, ****ing ****!

edit : new picture added

Re: Snapped Bolts Cam cover

are you talking about the studs that hold the valve cover to the head? cuz there's only 5 of them total, not 20 like you have pictured.

your diagram shows the studs that hold the spark plug covers to the valve cover, which is no big deal at all if you break them.

correct me if i'm wrong tho.

Re: Snapped Bolts Cam cover

Are those the bolts for the cam caps? If so, you'll need to fix them. Don't run the engine without them.

How did you break them? I've R&R'ed dozens of sets of these bolts, and I've never had a single one break or stretch. You're using a torque wrench, aren't you? There's also a pattern to R&R the bolts, so keep that in mind. :)

Re: Snapped Bolts Cam cover

No nick i seriously doubt that these are the same ones your talking about. Again sorry about the poor picture i was at school and paint was all i had to work with. But here the bolts with the red squares are the ones i snapped. I ran the motor today and it SEEMED fine.

Edit: yep 71dsp i torqued them down to spec and in the right order

Sorry to hear that. I've never had that kind of trouble with them. You definitely need to replace them, though.

Re: Snapped Bolts Cam cover

I dont think its 43 lb.ft. I think its like 19. You probably over torqued them.

Re: Snapped Bolts Cam cover

Whoa, I missed that. 43??!?! 43 what? ft*lbs or N*m? Either way, that's WAAAY too much.

Torque spec for those bolts is only 19 lb*ft or 25 N*m.

You need to replace ALL of those bolts now, as I bet most of them have stretched. Let's hope you didn't damage the aluminum threads in the head.

The torque spec for the 6mm bolts (the ones with the 10mm heads) on the ends is 8.7 lb*ft or 12 N*m.

Where did you get 43? I've looked through the manual and I don't see that anywhere with regard to these bolts...

Re: Snapped Bolts Cam cover

Yeah, the head bolts get a final torque of 72lb ft. Where is 43 from. I get scared when i am only torque stuff down with a 25 ft lb.

Chiltons? That's your problem. Buy a real service manual. www.helm-inc.com.

43 lb*in = 3.6 lb*ft, so that's can't be right.

Re: Snapped Bolts Cam cover

19 lb*ft on the larger cam cap bolts (12mm head, 8mm bolt), and 8.7 lb*ft on the smaller cam cap bolts (10mm head, 6mm bolt).

I think I've stretched one before, but the head was questionable, so I'm thinking it was over torqued at some point. I've never had another problem, and I've R&R'ed more of those bolts than I care to remember!
