Timing issue maybe?

I have an 87 base Lude. It was running harsh chokeing, backfiring through the carb, it would jerk pretty viloently whenever you would first start out. If you were going up a hill in 1st pretty hard and you shifted to 2nd it would lose all power and you'd have to downshift back to 1st. Well needless to say one day I was pulling in my gf's driveway and it quit running. didn't sound like it was turning over well firing when it turned over. Towed it home pulled the valve and cam gear covers and my belt was very loose. I'm thinking the reason it quit running was because it jumped time. It would fire sometimes but not everytime. Like you would turn the key and it would turn and turn and turn then hit and keep doing that. So I was wondering if maybe it was a tooth or so out of time to begin with and thats why it was running harsh then just jumped another tooth or so and quit running? let me know if that could have been my problem. I heard backfiring through the carb is a good indication of it being out of time and my car was doing this. Sorry for the long post fellas. Thanks in advance. Skylor
