Advanced VTEC

Seeing the thread on VTEC vs. i-VTEC reminded me of Advanced VTEC. Honda released a press release in late September of '06.

Advanced VTEC continuously changes how open or closed the intake valve is, as opposed to VTEC and i-VTEC which only have two different positions. This increased low end and mid level power and increased fuel economy by 15% over the equivalent sized i-VTEC engine, in this case the 2.4l

Does anyone know whatever happened to this engine? It was supposed to debut in the '09 models, which obviously didn't happen.

Also, imagine if Honda combined Advanced VTEC and VTEC l which was direct injection.

Re: Advanced VTEC

this advanced vtec is what most all other cars with their version of vtec runs... such as toyotas vvti sytem. it does not open the valves farther just adjust if they open either earlier or later therefore adjust valve overlap, compression and other factors that play into fuel mileage and performance

Re: Advanced VTEC

I was always confused on this topic...

So the vtec versions in other manufacture's cars such as VW, have the their co-called vtec kick in at low rpm and stop at high rpms? This is what understood from my friend with a VW r32.

Re: Advanced VTEC

Advanced VTEC allows the intake valves to be fully closed, fully open and everywhere in between. As opposed to VTEC being partially open at idle to 5199 RPM and fully open from 5200 RPM to Red Line.

BMW has valvetronic which does the "same thing", obviously the engineering is different though.

Here's a link that explains it better than I.

Cams will be a thing of the past within 10 years if we continue using fuel injection vehicles. Valves will be opened and closed with electric motors for PERFECT horsepower and torque curves :D

There have been companies developing a hydraulic actuated valves, I believe I read somewhere that Formula 1 banned engines using hydraulic actuated valving.

Re: Advanced VTEC

It doesn't matter, it's obvious that this kind of thign will happen. To "cam" your engine in the future it'll just be a tune to have the servos open longer or further. Building it on the other hand you'd still need oversized valves etc.
